Need help authenticating a Hobo Nickel

Sorry for the amber hue, but I wanted to get this up quick. I know the OBHS authenticates these, but I am not a member. If anyone could give me any insight on these or where to turn to as far as originality, whose nickel it was, and value I would appreciate it.

Thanks,

Greg

I don't know if it's original or modern but the workmanship looks nice.

The workmanship is good, but I question the vintage because the coin appears to be well circulated. Let's see the back.

At least the patina looks vintage.

Most of the originals were carved during the Great Depression so they could have circulated at least 20 years before they were carved. I'm no expert but I'm guessing that may be an original based on the workmanship and original patina.

There's a very good article on Hobo Nickels in the Dec 9th supplement to the Coin Dealer Newsletter. Though the article doesn't give any specific sources for authentication, it does offer some tips in determining authenticity. Your nickle looks very much like a couple of the sAmples featured. Additionally, the subject of your piece is consistent with the great majority of carvings which feature the bearded hobo with hat.

Fresh metal in the grooves is one of the characteristics of modern pieces and looking at the photo of your piece, it looks like that's not an issue.

I might suggest you make an inquiry of the author. His name is Bill Fivaz, NLG
