I'm Officially a Variety Contributor - And a Thank You to HowardS

Walkerguy21DWalkerguy21D Posts: 11,663 ✭✭✭✭✭
While reading a thread on shield nickel varieties a week or so ago, I noticed forum member "howards" has a link in his tag line for shield nickel varieties and information.
Curious, I poked around a bit, then tried to attribute a 'funny looking' 1873 I had. It had a lot of mechanical doubling of the date which muddied things, but still could not find anything exactly like what I had. So I contacted Howard Spindel, and sent him my crude pics.
He could not identify it either, but offered at no charge to examine it in person and attribute it.
Well today he notified me that it was a previously unattributed RPD for that date. It is now officially listed as 1873 S2-3005 in the Shield Nickel Variety log, with me as the contributor.
Not a big deal, but a first for me, and many thanks to Howard for taking the time and effort to do this, and take some really good pics also:

For anyone who wants to find something new, try shield nickels. There are many shield nickel varieties, particularly minor RPDs, which have not yet been catalogued.

Thanks to Walkerguy21D, there is a new entry in the shield nickel variety database! And he gets listed as a contributor in my SNV computerized attribution program, so he has achieved numismatic immortality. image

Congrats, Greg, very cool! That's quite the RPD. This may be a newbie question, but were they using single number punches in 1873?
  • howardshowards Posts: 1,241 ✭✭✭
    Four digit punches in 1873.

And now your next question is going to be "how can you then get an RPD on only one digit?"

Two things affect that: 1) There are various ways in which the punch could be misaligned, which vary what shows on an RPD, and 2) the mint was varyingly successful in polishing off some RPD remnants.

P.S. I see this is my post number 666, which must be good for some kind of celebration.
