A 1 oz vial of silver shot from the US Treasury.

My local B&M has a small vial of silver shot that the owner says comes from the treasury and that he can't sell it until he can figure out what he's got. Is there even such a critter? I've never heard of it before.

  • I've seen one these at my B&M, but he wouldn't sell it to me. The story went that the shot could be used as change for those trading in silver certificates and such.

    They're not common but I don't think they're "rare".

A "silver pak" like this one sold on eBay about 10 days ago for $66.

I don't know if these were official releases or if they were an aftermarket gimmick. I'd own one but I wouldn't pay a big premium for it.

Neat but I prefer my silver to be in solid form.

In the early 1960's, when the Treasury still had a few million silver dollars in the vaults. When they decided to phase out Silver Certificates, the Treasury began releasing silver dollars through the banking system for Silver Certificates at face value. When the silver dollar supply ran out, they started substituting these silver packets that contained $1.00 worth of silver at the current rate of $1.29/oz. I assume that there is less than 1 oz. in those packets.

I'm pretty sure the few I have seen were in tubes as well.

Yes, I have 10 of these vials that I bought from APMEX several years ago. They should contain as much silver as a Silver Dollar, .77 oz. The writing on the vials say:
    ONE DOLLAR IN SILVER NUGGETS
As approved by secretary of the Treasury June 4 1963 public law 88-36. May be secured only by presenting in person one silver certificate to United States assay office, 115 Hermann St, San francisco, Cal. at the monetary value of $1.292929292 per fine troy ounce on or before June 24, 1968.

I meant a single bar or coin rather than a bunch of granules.

Got it! Besides: liquid silver = Mercury.
