Opinions on this 1976 PSA 8 George Brett I just bought?

This card was listed as a BIN for $195 or best offer, so I offered $180 and it was accepted. Very tough card to find nicely centered. I wanted to post the ebay link because I have a bad scanner. Scrowl down the listing and there's a huge scan of it. How did I do? Did I pay too much? Any and all opinions welcome.
PSA 8's actually don't come up very often on ebay so I wanted to put in a strong offer. And now the funny thing is, there is a PSA 9 listed on ebay with a BIN of $4500. No, I'm not spamming the PSA 9, it is not mine but I sure am curious if anyone will hit the BIN.

  • Hmmm..maybe its the scan...but all 4 corners kinda look rough, don't they? I've been wanting that card centered in a 7/8 for a while so I've looked at a bunch of them. It just looks a little shabby for an 8 IMO.

Scans can definitely be deceiving, but at first blush that looks like a horribly over-graded card. Still, $180 isn't too bad of a price, and the centering is definitely top-tier.

Thanks for the honesty guys. The corners were my concern, but I liked the centering so much I kind of decided to ignore a couple(or four) soft corners. image
Hey, I'm actually very glad I bought it or I might have been tempted to buy the PSA 9. image

What's up with PSA lately? Are they in a relaxed standard mode these days? I recently bought some PSA 9 1967 and 1973 commons and many had visible corner wear. They came from different sources. If they hammer my recent sub I'm going to scream. I send in well centered cards with sharp corners and they give me 8s while I buy garbage 9s on the open market.
  • Very nice pickup! that is EASILY his toughest mainstream issue, by a long shot.

it will look great on your registry image

Wow no offense but if cards like that are pulling 8's I think I have a new submission that will be going in soon. That is a rough 8 in my opinion.
I am on a budget and I am not afraid to use it!!

    Agreed

if your '76 Brett's are that centered, i recommend you send them in.

keep in mind that this isnt a case of "cards like that". this is a card that 36 years later, there are zero PSA 10's in existence and just nine PSA 9's

I like the eye appeal on the card you picked up. It is always a bit tough for me to truly see or appreciate corners in a scan (so I can't really comment on that) but it has really good centering on a card that is difficult to find in decent shape.

I think the corners will likely look better in hand..
but the centering is normally so bad on that card that I think the 8 is ok
  • I just got a 7 on dead centered Brett with three sharp corners. The other corner had a slight touch which I figured would keep it out of a 9 holder. I agree 100% with gemint's statement

Centering is real nice on that card. But to be honest, there is no way I get an "8" on a card with those corners. The card does present well with the nice centering and color. Enjoy the card!

I know how tough of a card it is, but that BIN price is crazy.

I understand what you are saying regarding the centering. I remember busting packs back in 76 and have a number of these left over from those days. To bad I didnt take better care of them when I was 12 years old! LOL

As for the grade, if I am understanding you correctly, your assumption is if this low pop card is dead centered it will get a better grade than one that is OC (basically a normal Brett card that we all have seen) and have the same corners and edges? If that is what you are saying I have to diagree with you. Maybe I have mis-understood your comment but I cannot agree with you there. I feel this card is just plain overgraded....assuming the scan is doing this card justice.

I like it. I have a 57 Mays that is centered but has similar corners. I knew the corners were soft but like the card more now than when I bought it.

I will admit that I have never received grades like that on cards I sent in to PSA.

I think you will really like the card in the long run.

I too don't believe a card that is tough to find centered should get leeway for corners if it's centered. It should be treated like any other card. I do hope the card presents better than the scan. In any event, the buyer got it at a good price and it's certainly a nice card, especially for collectors who place a premium on centering.

The card has strong centering but has 4 nearly rounded corners.

I would have graded this EX-MT if I was doing a pre screening before sending in and would not have even subbed the card if an 8 was the target.

Hopefully the card looks better in hand.

I hate being critical of others cards I just would not personally grade this NM-MT. Good luck.

I agree with most everyone. Centering is top notch!
But, I see print issues, inconsistent edges, touched corners, and it's slightly out of registration.

I'm glad you knocked it off your need list.

I think it's the scan, if you look at the reverse the corners appear sharper.

Won't know until you get it in hand.

I don't buy the OC nonsense, does PSA even know that card is tough centered?

    Really?

    Good for you.
