So after living in the DC metro area for 3 years, I had become quite spoiled to the frequency of coin shows. It seemed at least once a month I was able to go browse, which allowed me to keep my thumb on the pulse of the business. However due to my wife's PCS to Fort Bliss, my deployment to Afghanistan, and eventually my PCS to Fort Bliss I hadn't been to a coin show in over a year. I was going through some serious withdrawals. After arriving in El Paso, TX I quickly looked up a local coin shop, and inquired to join the local coin club. They informed me that they put on a coin show annually. I couldn't wait.

Which always seems to be a problem being so young (26), my wife convinced me if I were to be taken seriously I should leave the old fraternity shirt at the house. So I threw on a button up...

So this weekend was the much anticipated 49th Annual Coin Show. I was eager, but cautious because I hadn't heard of much traffic on the internet regarding the show. So after finishing up at the hospital this week, I talked my wife into joining me on Saturday at the show (which is unusual). The show was held at a Shriner's Hall, with the bourse floor the approximate size of 2 basketball courts. As I walked in I was amazed to see the room full of dealers & tables. Approximately 60 dealers had come, and every table was full. About 90% of the dealers were US Coin & Currency, with a few tables of International Coins/Paper, and a few dealers of jewelry (southwest motif), and a dealer of postcards and military history. They even had a table for the local girl scouts selling those delicious cookies (My wife bought 2, 1 is gone already). As I do at all shows the first pass, is usually quick as I am scanning tables on the floor. One thing that is always a pet peeve is the guys who are determined to search every box on the floor... usually on the case of the coins which blocks my view. But I tolerated, and my first pass was a success. I was surprised to see the great availability of nice looking material (a lot of dealers had been at Houston or Long Beach the previous month). I also saw in about every other dealers table, was bags of 90% silver asking 25-26x face. The buy prices were a little lower with ranges from 16x-21x face.

Some highlights include...
1800 H10C Likerty VF 20
1852 $10 Moffat AU
1851-C $1 AU 58
A surprising amount of Pattern coins, maybe 20
CWT- Jefferson Davis "Death to Traitors" in XF ( the dealer had just purchased it, and refused to part with it, I asked 3x)
Other Charlotte & Dahlonega $1/$2.5/$5 pieces in XF-AU
Extremely difficult National notes from Territories

The floor was busy with collectors looking for that coin, and you often had to wait for the 2-3 people to move on so you could get close enough to examine the contents of the case. Most dealers were friendly, working to help locate pieces within their inventory or suggesting coins that may be of interest. While a lot of the dealers were from the southwest states, I was surprised to speak with a few dealers from Maine, Nebraska, Michigan, Ohio, Colorado. And most said that business on the floor was good.

I would like to say that the International Coin Club of El Paso, did exceptionally well in preparation of the event. And the success of the show was a direct reflection of the handwork of the members of the club. I would say this is one of the better shows I have been to, and would recommend it.

I left with empty pockets too...
