Anyone know Fox Valley Coin in Kimberly, WI?

Looks like they sold a counterfeit Half Dime. They may not even be aware of it.

Heard of 'em. I think they advertise in some of the major publications, or used to. Dunno if I ever did biz with 'em in my old pre-Internet days or not.

FWIW, I wouldn't have known for sure if that half dime was counterfeit, but I can see why you'd pick up on it, from the surfaces. I'd not have known if it was, or if it was just maybe a dug coin with some surface issues. What other red flags clue you in, if any?

They've been discussed on here before. I'm fairly sure they would make that right. I had a dealer friend that used to buy a lot of stuff from them, it was generally overgraded, problem or both but he knew that and paid accordingly.

I used to buy from them in the 1970's/1980's via their Coin World mail bid sales. Never had a problem. Bought some neat seated coins too.

Is that 1837 half dime a rare variety or something? $175 sounds like a lot of money for a heavily scrubbed and possibly corroded coin.

Unknown obverse reverse combo. Plus it has the "look" of a counterfeit. I have a couple of examples with the exact look. I'm 99.99% sure it's a counterfeit. I'd guess they didn't know. Thought if someone knew them they could give them a heads up.

Diagnostics, please. It looks like a problem coin, but I don't know what I'd say is fake about it. Mushy details? Denticles wrong? Digits malformed? I guess the more I look at it, the more I agree with your assessment, but I'm not sure why.

    OK, that would do it.

'sand pebble' texture very diagnostic for a Chinese fake.

They are reputable. I have had nothing but pleasant dealings with them. The coin is indeed fake, however. If someone contacts them and tells them, they will not send it to the buyer.

I've known Fritz for close to 30 years. Good guy. Just talked to him, and the coin has already been taken back and refunded. It was an honest mistake.

BTW, he got it a few months ago in a collection, and the seller got it back in 1985! Looks like one of the spark erosion counterfeits we used to see at ANACS in the early '80's.

I have bought from there mail bid auctions back in the day. Overall very good coins. They had many problem coins that were fully disclosed and priced based on that. They have very good service and a few times went out of there way to help me on a few items I was looking for. I am very sure the fake was a mistake no doubt in my mind.
