Getting Toned Coins Graded -Question-

Hello all,

Tercentenary here, the new guy on the block. I'm fairly new to collecting (3 years) mostly bullion with a handful of numismatics. Thank you for having me aboard!

After searching I still have not found a satisfactory answer and was hoping someone could help me out. What is the grading criteria in regards to toned coins what do the grading companies consider "natural toning" vs "artificial toning".

I have a few coins from old framed coin displays as well as dansco albums that have nice toning. I have considered sending a couple in for grading but don't know what to expect or whether they would be rejected as artificial or not.

Any information is appreciated.

Can you show us some pictures? It's a lot easier to say what is right or wrong about an example, rather than just list information blind. Unless you're ricko, in which case all toning is insurmountable damage

Do post some photos. As I understand it, PCGS has become a little tighter on toners, but natural toning is natural toning.

As far as the toning, I believe it would grade. However, the coin appears to have been cleaned (at least from the pic).

Your Peace dollar appears to have been polished and would not grade at PCGS or NGC. These coins that were put in frames were typically circulated pieces that were polished prior to sale. The high sulfur content of the polish accelerated the toning on these coins. They will not grade.

With that particular coin I could not tell, but i have a few framed sets where the polishing is more obvious. In this case, the picture is taken through a plexi cover? I didn't mention that, but I'm sure you guys can tell a cleaned coin from one that's not.

I think toning from an album or folder is considered natural. There are people that will tone a coin artificially in ways I will not say. But I believe that TPGs have a machine or something that can sniff out AT coins.

Its a shame too,because it toned nice,but alas Dr. Tom is correct as usual.
