Need some help identifying Medal....Any experts out there?

Good afternoon, does anyone know the origins of the below medal?

A coworker told me his uncle obtained it in the 1960's. Any information is greatly appreciated.

Thank you

Well the obverse is a Pope and the reverse the Vatican, if you didn't already know that. image

Looks like a papal medal celebrating the 58th pope Saint Silverius. Unsure if it was minted by the vatican, but that's the inscription. Little know fact he was the son of a pope, before celibacy was mandatory.

No idea what inscription you're reading; it refers to Pope Julius II (IVLIVS LIGVR PAPA SECVNDVS = Julius II, Ligurian, Pope).

To copy from the response I posted on your darkside thread:
"A papal medal for Pope Julius II commemorating the construction of the new St. Peter's Basilica based on the original design by Bramante. When this design was originally struck in 1509, the construction work had been ongoing for three years. The original medal was by Gian Cristoforo Romano, though yours appears to be a restrike from copy dies created at a later date (second half of the 18th century). This design was then restruck for many years for sale to collectors and tourists."

Yep, it's a papal medal, but that much is already obvious.

The Darksiders should be able to nail it down its finer points, if you haven't posted it there already.

You can listen to what Iosephus has to say about these pieces. The man knows his stuff and is always more than willing to share his knowledge. He is one of the strong guys when discussing these medals.
This is a re-strike, but still very collectible.
