What is going on in this picture?

image

I don't have any questions about the autograph, but instead about the picture. My son put in a good 1-2 hours researching it this morning. Below is what we came up with and what we don't know.

Known:

1. Photo is an 8x10 stamped on the back by "Fay Foto Service, Inc. 45 W. Canton St., Boston. KEN 0018." Front of photo has a notation that is part of the photograph: "F4273-13."
2. Photo pictures Ted Williams wearing an overcoat, standing next to a young woman. The woman is not his wife from his playing days, Doris Soule.

Guesses:
1. This photo appears to have been taken in left-center field at Fenway Park. Note the outfield door at the right edge and the advertising signs. Does anyone else think this is correct?

Unknowns:
1. Why is there a helicopter on the field at Fenway Park?
2. What is the helicopter? The tail has a decal on it that says "Wo____'s ______arron-An____." We tried the following two words on Google with no success:

"Woody's Sharron"
"Woody's Barron"
"World's Sharron"
"World's Barron"

3. Can this photo be dated? Perhaps a way to see vintage pictures of the interior of Fenway to see if the signage matches up?
4. I am not too experienced with "type" photos. Is this a "type" photo, and if so, which type?

Thanks for any information anyone can provide.

    Tony:

Great picture! While I have no clue, my suggestion would be to post this to the Net54 boys in their memorabilia thread........

Looks like a Type 1 picture to me and the autograph is an authentic one IMO....

Always up for a Internet search and find....perhaps Ted was modelling a Barron Anderson coat, and that's what the advertising is on the helicopter? See below link:

Wow, great detective work! How on Earth did you think of that as a possibility?

Used your Barron thought and figured the second word might be Anderson...so I Googled "Barron Anderson Boston" and voila....

My daughter was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at the age of 2 (2003). My son was diagnosed with Type 1 when he was 17 on December 31, 2009. We were stunned that another child of ours had been diagnosed. Please, if you don't have a favorite charity, consider giving to the JDRF (Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation)

Maybe by contacting Fay Foto they might be able to give you more information based on the file number on the photo

Someone on Net54 said the word above "Barron-Anderson" is "Worumbo," which appears to have been a retailer.

I have a friend who is the Photo Archivist for the Red Sox. I shared this photo with her this morning, and she got right back to me with this news article, stating this photo was likely taken at the event mentioned in the article regarding a Filene's promotion, as that was the only time she was aware of a helicopter landing at Fenway in the Williams era. Based on the use of "last fall... pennant winning", the photo could be dated to 1946.

Further confirming this....the article mentions a Sikorsky S-51 (although it's misspelled in the article) landing at Fenway. When checking out the pictures at the link provided, it confirms the helicopter on the field is a S-51. The right side landing gear, and the cowling at the base of the main rotor look identical.
