Question about Proof Lincoln Memorial Cent Varieties

Hello -

I'm a new poster on these boards and relatively new collector.

I am collecting the Proof Lincoln Memorial Complete Variety Set and recently purchased a 1960 "Tripled Die Obverse" (PCGS No. 3416 - DETAILS HERE)

My question is how, or whether, this differs from the TDO FS-103 (FS - 023) variety (PCGS No. 38158 - DETAILS HERE).

Thank you in advance, and apologies if this is a dumb question.

Thanks,
CalloftheGame

Nice pick up. I believe that the only difference between the two is that the PCGS #38158 denotes the specific FS attribution on the slab. I know that for the 55 and 72 DDOs, and 1983 DDR, and several other of the major varieties, PCGS will denote such varieties without a variety attribution fee by PCGS. If you want the unique FS number on the holder for the same coin, it is an additional $24.

    Welcome to the forum!

From what I can tell there is no difference. Same coin, just different PCGS lingo (as copperhunter more clearly put it). There's only one TDO for 1960 proofs.

  • Thank you all for the responses and warm regards.

It's strange that this is in fact the same coin, and especially strange that it actually costs more to have the specific FS listed, especially when the auction prices for the two different types seem to be so different (the "Tripled Die Obverse" ones seem to sell for 50% more or so, but maybe it's just because of their perceived rarity -- only 11 have been certified like that, while 52 have been certified with the FS).

I guess this means I overpaid for this coin. Oops. :-/

    Welcome !!

It would help to know a few things. PCGS graded some coin varieties BEFORE they set up their variety registry sets. So you will see some coins listed with 2 different PCGS numbers. Like the 1990 No S proof. And yes, there are 2 separate population numbers and often some sort of values assigned to one (usually the older number) The only problem is that if you enter the coin number into the Variety sets and it does not take, its because its under the the old numbered system. In order to get the coin listed in a variety set you will need to send it back to PCGS and get them to reholder the coin with the current and thus correct number. The issue I and many others have with this part is that it is not a simple $10 reholder fee. Its a full blown variety designation fee as well even though they already determined what the coin is...

Overpaid? If you're new to the series, then maybe not. When there are only a few guys seriously collecting within a small subset, then merely adding one can tip the scales greatly in favor of higher prices.

    Exactly!

  • There are many doubled dies on proof 1960 Lincolns, so the "TDO" could be a minor or a major doubled die. I'd need photos of the variety in order to be able to possibly tell you what the differences are.

  • Thanks, I'll post some hi-rez photos when I can.

I don't know when the coin was holdered to begin with; I did attach a low-rez photo of it to the original post. I do know that when I added the "Tripled Die Obverse" to my variety set, it did slot in as an FS-103.

I'm not sure that I should get it re-holdered, since not only is it a charge, but it seems to be scarcer and sell for more like this, right?

Hi and welcome to the boards. I collect all the Lincoln proof cents with MAJOR varieties which I feel represents a complete Lincoln proof cent series for MY interest. There are many collectors who enjoy the additional varieties that PCGS has in its COMPLETE set registry so if that is what YOU like, certainly enjoy it. Owning all the memorials thru 2008 is a good achievement to work towards. Good luck. Steveimage

If it fits in the slot, don't waste your money. It is the same coin, and the only TDO for the date. PCGS should merge the pops on these two, but they won't ... we've been down this road before.
