Is anyone working on a 4 sport same year mega set?

I was born in 1971 so I thought it would be fun to put together Topps sets from all 4 mainstream sports. Here is where im currently at.

1971 Topps Baseball 76.77% complete 7.77 GPA
1971 Topps Basketball 100% complete 8.52 GPA
1971 Topps Hockey 100% complete 8.97 GPA
1971 Topps Football 100% complete 7.98 GPA

Im hoping to have the Baseball completed in about a year or so. Is anyone else doing a similar set? If so what year are you working on? I wonder if PSA would add this type of set to the registry?

Cheers!
Mike

I'm currently working on the 1980 Topps baseball, and considered collecting the 4 major sports from this year. I thought that someone had requested a set from this year, so I went to look for it, but could never find it. I think this would be a really neat project for serious Topps collectors.

I like it. I dont think I could do all sports from a year, but would do sports of interest just because of similar designs or card stock or whatever. I have a fond draw to eras and years are no exception.

That's a cool idea, and it would be a good way to branch into other sports. Those are some nice sets you have going!

The 1980 Topps Hockey set is that set that had the black rub-off thingies covering the players' names. It appears to be an unpopular set--the highest registered set is at 76%--and I've always wondered how or if PSA judges those black splotches.

Hank - they need to be intact for the top grades.

I bought a PSA 9 from the 1980 Topps Hockey set and was kind of suprised by the amount of visible scratch lines in the black--I would have assumed that for a top grade like that, the black stuff would need a relatviely pristine surface, but I guess not.

Mike, great idea and some great sets you have here.
If I were going to start that project, I'd choose the same year
as you did. All four sports had great looking sets that year.

Does anyone know what the first year that Topps made a complete set of all 4 of the major sports?

That is a pretty cool idea! Though it would be tough for me to choose a year, I would probably choose 1978 since that is the year I started collecting and I absolutely love the baseball set from that year. Best of luck on your quest!
  • 1974 was the first year I started collecting. I am not putting together all four sports but am putting together three of them. My progress is as follows:

1974 Baseball 100% complete with an 8.20 gpa
1974 Football 99.43% complete with an 8.25 gpa
    1974-75 Basketball 86.36% with an 8.11 gpa

The basketball set has been the toughest as not many cards that I need come up for auction on Ebay. It has been great fun though!

    I'm doing 1977!

1977 Topps Football 100% complete 8.97 GPA (#2 on registry)
    1977 Topps Basketball 100% complete 9.16 GPA
    1977 Topps Hockey 40.91% complete 8.92 GPA
1977 Topps Baseball 0% complete 0 GPA (recently sold about 50% of this set)

    Thanks,
    -Larry
