It is my unfortunate duty to inform you, and the rest of the public, that what you heard is true. The proud thirty-six year history of Gorham (Maine) Coin Club semi-annual coin shows has come to an end, and our usual March coin show will not take place. This unfortunate but very necessary step was taken by a recent vote of the club members in response to dramatically increasing costs to sponsor the shows, declining attendance at shows by both dealers and collectors, and an even more serious decline in revenue generated by those shows. While it has never been our objective to make money on these shows, neither has it been our objective to lose money on them, either. Our last show, in October, lost a considerable amount of money for the club, and prompted our decision.

It is possible that, in the future, with an improving economy, the Gorham Coin Club might once again sponsor additional coin shows in Maine, but this would only be possible if we can be assured of adequate attendance, if we can locate an affordable and satisfactory venue, and if there is an indication from dealers and collectors that they would patronize such shows were they to be run.

I would stress that this was a very difficult decision for the club to make, and was not entered into lightly. Sadly, I fear that it is a sign of the times for local coin clubs.

    Respectfully,
    Stephen A. Crain - President
