Still no Dr. J ... GRRRR that is the one I need to find
Looking for a Glen Rice Inkredible and Alex Rodriguez cards
  • Anyone going. Some cool guest.
Meadowlark Lemon would be cool to get. Can't wait for his Ginter auto this year.

I bet Mike Tyson does big numbers.
    Does Pippen do many signings?
  • Doc Gooden and Darryl Strawberry together! That would be a cool photo to get them together.

After those four National League games, Gorman Thomas was never the same, and neither were the Brewers, and come to think of it neither was I.

How on earth does a Marian Hossa and Mike Bossy autograph cost more than a Bobby Hull autograph? Just don't get it.

Bossy isn't signing much and you can get Hull once/week if you want. Supply/demand.

Just got back from the show with my 10 year old son.

Best thing at the show was all the signers. Not much on the vintage unopened (No BBCE). A lot of really nice people set up at the show....
We saw a great deal of new cards being traded or being bought by dealers- although I don't collect new stuff.

Very few graded basketball cards for sale. Crowds seemed pretty heavy in the auto area. Kind of cool to hear names like Scottie Pippen, Karem Abdul Jabbar, and Meadow Lark Lemon being announced over the louder speaker.

BTW, my son had a blast picking through tons of different table's "dollar boxes". He actually picked up a ton of cool cheaper deals.

Unopened Boxes, Packs, Cards, and Tickets

Just send me a PM or email me for discount off eBay pricing. Thanks

    - 1969 Topps Kareem
    - NBA 50 Litho Kareem
    - NBA 50 Litho Elgin Baylor
    - NBA 50 Litho James Worthy
    - NBA 50 Litho Rick Barry
    - 1967 Philly Chris Hanburger
    - 1959 Topps Sam Huff
    - 16x20 Marian Hossa
Here is my haul from the SunTimes show on Friday and Saturday. I have decided to take on a new project and started the NBA 50 greatest player lithograph. I passed on getting Havlicek and Pippen because their fee was ridiculous IMHO. I also added Marian Hossa to my Stanley Cup photo. It kills me to pay his fee but I didn't want to take the chance of not being able to get him in the future. His autograph is an absolute joke and he should be ashamed to charge people for that chicken scratch. He might possibly have the worst autograph in all of sports. It is almost comical how bad it is.

Went to the show Friday & Saturday... was going to go back on Sunday morning to drop another sub off with PSA, but decided not too. Sure, it's conveinent to drop off right to them, but I can ship this sub cheaper than the $10 admission to get into the show again.

Overall, I thought this show was better than the November show... Auto lineup was stellar as usual and the dealer selection was a bit better. Still a lot of the same guys, with the same setup, and the same stuff... I bet at least half of them don't sell anything all weekend and spend more time buying to feed their eBay stores. They're generally easy to spot... either they have a bunch of crap stuff listed at "book" or they have all the shiny stuff with 4 and 5 figure price tags... and the only people at their tables are the ones having the dealer look through their stuff to see what they can buy.

I went with four goals in mind...

    1) Pick up more 1956 Topps Baseball to round out a 100 minimum March $4.50 special... This was successful, even a little too successful! Got great deals from three different dealers and had to shuffle my sub around 3 times. Went to the show only needing to pick up 13 cards to hit the 100 minimum... ended up buying 46 more 1956 cards and dropping some of the modern stuff from my originally intended submission. Ended up subbing 122 cards on the special (83 of them from 1956). I sold off my 95% complete raw 1956 set back at the National in 09... always told myself I'd pick it up again one day but do it in PSA 5-6-7... this $4.50 special finally got me to get on it!

    2) Work on my set list from 2012 Topps Heritage (since I busted 5 boxes last week)... This was mildly successful. I say mildly successful because I was able to cut my SP need list down by about 60%... but mildly, because I literally only found 1 dealer in the entire convention hall that had 2012 Heritage singles for sale. Sure, the product was only on the street for a few days, but I expected at least a few dealers to have some!

    3) Pick up some PSA 9 1986-86 Fleer Basketball cards for my set and/or some PSA 10 1988-89 Fleer Basketball cards for my set... Total fail. Wasn't squat to be found outside of a handful of dealers that had a card or two of one of the bigger name 86 RC's in PSA 9... and then wanted stupid prices.

    4) Pick up some nice high grade singles (raw-to-be-graded or graded) for my Aaron Rodgers, Brett Favre, Albert Pujols, and/or Hank Aaron sets. Almost a total fail, but not quite. Couldn't find a single table with the Aaron Rodgers or Pujols rookie cards I'd be interested in (which is odd for a Chicago show). The saving grace... I stopped by a dealer who had a 1959 Topps Hank Aaron in PSA 8... picked it up for $320 (roughly $50 below VCP, so I was thrilled)

This was probably the first show I went to since, my God I don't know if I can think that far back, that I didn't make an impulse wax purchase just to have something to bust... I was oddly happy about that. Then again, I think the time spent nitpicking through the different dealers stacks of 56's for crease/wrinkle free cards with decent centering helped curb that urge.

Plus, I saw Kevin Burge set up at the show... it's always fun to check out his stuff and just wonder.... and I always love walking right past the huge 707 set up (which is generally pretty vacant given the enormous inventory they have on display) knowing it's not worth stopping because I have no interest in paying what they're asking (something learned from experience over the years of asking what they were looking for, only to "always" walk away shaking my head).

Nice Auto's John. Kareem looks great.

How hard Is it to find a Fully spelled out Kareem Abdul-Jabbar cards?
  • MBMiller25MBMiller25 Posts: 6,057 ✭✭
Eric, I have always had trouble finding 87-87 fleer myself t shows. I usually end up finding them raw and having to sub them myself.

Sounds like a good show for you, thanks for recap. It always surprises me that with all the crap Kevin Burge pulls on EBAY, someone does punch that guy at a show.

My cousin who is 10 years older than me and also I life long resident of Milwaukee has some good stories about the big man and trying to get his autograph back in the day when he played for the Bucks. Most of the time he would just hit the exit at the old Milwaukee Arena after the game and wouldn't bother to stop and sign for anyone. If you were lucky you might get an "Abdul" or "Jabbar" but never the full name. I think Kareem has mellowed a lot since those days and was even doing TTM a few years ago.
  • I got Jabbar (Lew Alcindor's) 1969 Topps Rookie Signed at the show as well. Waiting on it. Havlicek's prices are insane. Bought his 1969 Topps Rookie signed for $50 on Ebay. Definitely the Real Deal. I got Walt Frazier last month from Collectors Showcase's Edison Show for $35 and he is $49 here. I wanted to get my Baylor 1969 signed but not at $79 . I wouldn't even pay $79 to get his 1961 Fleer signed. Somebody has to get Earl Monroe and Willis Reed, Billy Cunningham, and Hal Greer at a show.
  • anyone go Sunday. Did Tyson draw big numbers?
  • jswietonjswieton Posts: 2,870 ✭✭✭
Tyson's line was nowhere near as long as it was at it was at the Nationals. If I had to guess I would say they sold somewhere around 250-300 tickets for Tyson. I was really surprised how long the Frank Thomas line was considering he did 5-6 free signings out here in Chicago at the end of last year.
