Opinions on GAI card offered on Ebay

If any board members have a minute or two, I would like your input on this card on ebay. Item number 260935264915 I know about GAI rep. Just wanted to know if the card looks good. I also know chances of it crossing to PSA 7.5 are next to zilch, but what would it be? Thanks.

  • Look at the right side border towards the bottom next to the Yankee logo. There is something on the card it appears. I moved my laptop screen up and down and I can see it better but cant make out what it is. I dont think its on the slab.

Yes, im sure someone with more knowledge of 1953 Topps might know better than me. Also for some reason the top of the card looks odd to me. I can tell you why, it just dont look right to me. Again im not an expert in 53's just giving my opinion.

uhhh, and the top edge looks like it was trimmed using a protractor, terrible card.

The top does look trimmed. Also no returns or exchanges...........

The wavyness at the top is an optical illusion caused by the holder. There does appear to be something unusual on the lower right boarder.

If that seller could get that card into a PSA or SGC holder he would have done so already.

There is nooooo free lunch when it comes to Mantles.

Edited to add: Look at the back, top right corner.

Cards that exhibit that type of wear generally do not have razor corners.

    Good for you.

I think the top border looks that way due the gasket. Doesn't mean it's not trimmed, just not that badly trimmed. And lower right border does look like it has issues. I surely would not risk it. Good luck.

Boy, mcolney1 beat me to it. I agree with what he said. image

Does the top border look like that because of the holder? If you look at the back, you don't see it.

    EDIT: I type to slow...

I'm in no way supporting GAI - don't care for them - tragic what they did to this company but I wonder if the top edge is an illusion - lighting? I've seen the same thing on PSA cards?

If that were truly the upper edge - bowed like that? Even Stevie Wonder could see that?

I would stay away from GAI. If you plan on subbing to PSA, you will need to crack it out. If you don't mind the possibility of the card being raw (not being able to get into a PSA holder) then by all means go for it. If you can get it in a PSA Authentic holder with the looks of a '7', then you might be able to get $800-$1,000 for it.

PS - this appears to be that one that sold thru Mile High in 2009 for $3,700. GAI's good name (if there ever was such a thing) has gone down considerably since then.....

I think the "wavy" top edge is from the overhang of the gasket. Steve is correct about the upper left edge (upper right on the reverse). Accordingly, there's a reason that it isn't in a PSA or SGC holder. If you like to gamble with bad odds, take a shot. Personally, I'd rather bet on the flip of a coin rather than on that card.
  • What about the "image" on the lower right border. Im curious what it might be.

  • Newer GAI holder. Top left corner looks like someone rebuilt it. Badly. Top edge looks trimmed. Appears to be spooned out rubber band marks.

I honestly think a grader at PSA would send back a note with the card (ungraded/unslabbed) saying "Thanks for the laugh".

Next MONTH? So he's saying that if he wins, the best-case scenario is that he'll be paying for it two weeks after the auction ends?

Forget blocking him; find out where he lives and go punch him in the nuts. --WalterSobchak 9/12/12
