The Vliegenthart (Flying Hart) Shipwreck coins

Hi Guys-

I just bought this coin about a month ago, with its original box. Does anybody have any coins from this wreck?

That is a neat piece. My first impression would not have been a shipwreck recovered coin.
  • This is a 1734 Netherlands Ducaton (silver rider) 32.78g .941 silver...Just about an ounce of pure - nice big coin. In hand it looks like it has Au-Unc Details (shipwreck effect) with some luster. Pretty cool coin - at a great price! $60!

For what its worth. I bought one of them in that same box about a year ago. Sent it to NGC because it seemed quite nice for what it was. It came back as not genuine. Sent it in a again a few months later. Same result.
  • does yours weigh out correctly?

It does. I don't recall what it weighed, but I'll dig around my desk at work tomorrow so I can post its weight (and take a photo). I wouldn't have posted my experience if it weren't for the fact that the one I bought came in the exact same box as yours.

Obviously, I thought NGC was wrong or I wouldn't have sent it in twice. The coin "feels" right and the only thing that ever gave me pause about it was that it was exceptionally well preserved, much like yours.
  • Since these coins have salt water corrosion (pits) they might slap a "not genuine" on it because it because they might think it is a cast copy(small bubbles that the casting did not fill). I think you might have to submit shipwreck coins differently to NGC because they are graded on a "shipwreck effect"scale(?). I might try PCGS for "genuine" holder.

Yes, I got many coins from that VOC wreck ,
amongst them, is this one image

These silver ducatons (riders) were not part of the official VOC cargo , but were smuggled on board by members of the crew, to sell them for a profit in
Indonesia , where silver was higher valued then in Europe.
many of them were in good shape because they were still in their original wooden cases after 250 years.

Rex Cowan and his crew found most of the official VOC cargo : 6000 gold ducats & 400 kilo of silver mexican cobs , and the non official cargo: 9000 silver ducatons
in 20 different varieties, many struck in the Netherlands & Spain, and some from Belgium and Luxumbourg.

These ducatons are minted in the province of Overijssel (TRANSI)
they were the bulk of the unofficial cargo of 9000 silver riders:

    1733 - 2525 ex.
    1734 - 2555 ex.

price range depending on condition 100 - 200 USD
I think your coin is one of the best, although I didn't see the backside.

the name of the ship is Vliegend Hart , in old dutch that means Flying Deer , and not flying hart image
Here's a picture of the ship, the shield on the right is from the mayor of Vlissingen and member of the VOC Zeeland, he gave the ship its name.

here's another Silver Rider 1734 coin from my collection, I put some info with the pictures.
The american motto E Pluribus Unum is a more or less translation from the dutch motto, Concordia Res Parvae Cresvunt.

Very nice piece, particularly for a sea-salvaged example. Shipwreck provenance is always interesting, too. image
