What is the most collected quarter series?

With the exception of the current series (State and National park) what would you say is the most collected series?

Does it tend to be the newer series' that are more popular, decreasing as one ventures into the past? Does this fit as a general rule with most denominations? It seems to be plausible, perhaps with the exception of the oldest type in the series, which always tends to get more attention because they are "firsts."

Keep in mind I am talking about popularity among collectors (people actually collect them,) not desirability (people want to collect them.)

Washingtons by a mile probably. SLQs/Barbers are out of nearly everyone's range and the prices don't get any better when you move into the seated and bust coinage.

If money were no object, SLQs would be my choice.

Washingtons...even more than a MILE. image

Collectible usually means that there are enough of them to go around and there also needs to be enough to be "promoted" as well.

Agreed. Washington's by a FAAAAAAR margin. The others are just too spendy for most people where as Washington's only have a couple key dates.

The newest series always have the greatest following, with the lone exception of silver dollars, where Morgans have to be the most popular (over Peace, Eisenhower, and later issues).

Well, more than a couple keys. The perfect amount of keys, in fact. Enough to make it challenging, but not enough to make it impossible.

The Washington series because of an abundance of affordable coins and generally ample mintages.

Washington by far I would guess.

SLQ's would be my preference if I were collecting quarters.

He said besides Statehood, but you're right. The number of Statehood collectors would probably dwarf Washington collectors like Wasington collectors dwarf Seated collectors.

Just because I know the answer doesn't mean it isn't worth discussing.

Dollars is an interesting realm, as was stated, the newer coins are not popular at all...as a matter of fact I'm not sure dollars are ever popular when they are issued. Morgan dollars were NOT generally collected when they were actually minted, let alone used. I would go so far as to say they were hated at the time. Not unlike the pres dollars eh?

Are nickels and dimes the same way as quarters? I always thought the Buffalo and Merc types were more popular than their more modern counterparts.

You mean quarters with eagles on the back...you are correct! image

Quarter eagles would be a great series to collect! Maybe when my kids are grown...
