Question about the importance of centering

You are purchasing a vintage PSA graded card of a HOF player that is within your budget (say a Mantle, Aaron, Clemente, etc.). Okay, which of the following would you prefer to buy:

A) PSA 9 OC

B) PSA 8 (No qualifier, but with 70/30 centering)

C) PSA 7 (near perfect centering: very close to 50/50)

D) PSA 5 or PSA 6 (perfect 50/50 centering)

My choice will almost always be (B). I like a well centered card but I'm just not a centering freak. I'll take a card with razor sharp corners and edges and good color/focus with centering that's just slightly off.

Which would you choose?

I would take the PSA 7. 70/30 centering just doesn't look good for a PSA 8

    C, but some 5's and 6's look like 7's so maybe D.

My daughter was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at the age of 2 (2003). My son was diagnosed with Type 1 when he was 17 on December 31, 2009. We were stunned that another child of ours had been diagnosed. Please, if you don't have a favorite charity, consider giving to the JDRF (Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation)

    E) A well centered PSA 8

Sorry I know that wasn't one of your scenarios but I wouldn't buy any of the cards that fit the options you listed.

It depends on the centering of A. I have seen some terribly OC cards that really kill eye appeal, but have also seen some that just missed on centering. Also, for a year/card with major centering issues (79 Ozzie Smith) I would buy the 9oc if it were close to making it without the qualifier. I think some collectors are so caught up on centering that a not so bad 9oc can be purchased at a really good discount.

I'm a cheap collector so I would go for D every time. I'm not a big fan of high grade cards. I view cards as toys so I expect to see some dinged corners and I prefer it that way. I love me some PSA 5 and 6 cards. They're the best value in collecting IMHO.

When you take a picture with a camera, unless you're going for some artsy look, you always put the subject in the middle of the frame. I'm totally OCD when it comes to centering; a dead-centered card just has great eye appeal.

  • I only buy centered cards in 8, 9, or 10. I do not purchase cards with tilt either. That bugs me, and o-pee-chee is full of them.
