Time for another exciting game of "Cherry or Pit?"

seanqseanq Posts: 8,731 ✭✭✭✭✭
People seemed to have fun the first time I did this, so here's another potential cherrypick for you guys to follow. I bought this 1880 Indian cent on eBay this afternoon, shown below is the seller's picture of the reverse.

My suspicion is that it is the Snow-1 variety, a minor doubled die obverse paired with a reverse showing a wildly misaligned die clash. There are great photos of this variety on Rick Snow's research wikispace. In addition below is a photo from an XF example that sold on eBay last month.

The first time we played this game it worked out in my favor, but I'm not nearly as confident in this attribution as I was of the 1917 DDO Lincoln in that earlier thread. I've looked at the photos on three different monitors and even tried to do an overlay of the two photos above, and I ended up confident enough to place my $9.50 bet on the coin, but I'm not convinced it's a winner.

What this coin does have in common with the Lincoln is that it a variety I've been trying to cherrypick for years. If I'm right then I get another humblebrag thread; if not, then I'll give the coin away on the forum. Either way, someone will end up happy.

I see the marks and stuff at bottom of shield on the second coin, but not the first one.

    The results are in.

Nothing but a plain old VG Indian cent. Win some, lose some, just gotta win enough to soften the sting of the losses.

First PM who wants it gets it, it's of no use to me now. image.

EDIT: You have to be quick to get free stuff around here - the coin has been claimed
