  • The world cup, soccer trophy already listed, is the only one with significant melt value. However, it is like the Stanley Cup, in that the winning team only gets temporary possession. For most other sports, the winning team keeps their trophy. The Lombardi trophy is sterling silver and weighs 3.2 kg. so about $3200 in silver melt value with silver at $34 (31.1 grams per troy ounce 3200 grams .925 sterling).

Olympic medals used to use real gold, but the newer gold medals are silver with a plating of gold, and silver ones are silver. Superbowl rings and other championship rings have some melt value. The rings from Super Bowl One were less than half an ounce of gold. More recent rings are much bigger, and often have 2+ ounces of gold. Some teams do a full ring for players and coaches, and a staff ring for office personnel that is scaled down. From memory, I remember the ring budget is in the range of $40k for the main ring, and $4k for staff rings, and the winning team gets to design the ring.

My cousin's husband is the weight trainer for the Heat. Previously for the football Hurricanes. He has championship rings from both NCAA football and NBA. They are huge, with fat diamonds/stones in them.
  • Another thought about the rings, 2+ ounces of gold! Imagine taking two gold one ounce eagles and making a sandwich around one of your fingers. The later day Superbowl rings have more gold than the two eagles! Wow.
