Can someone PLEASE explain it to me.

Why ?
What is the psychology behind paying so much for something like this ?
Who are these types of collectors ?
What is going through their heads ?

Just think of the vintage you could buy for $3100.
Love to see the value of that card in 5, 10, 20 years.
Some people just have money to burn. IMHO.
You could buy his gameworn autographed sweater for less!!
Currently collecting 1934 Butterfinger, 1969 Nabisco, 1991 Topps Desert Shield (in PSA 9 or 10), and 1990 Donruss Learning Series (in PSA 10).

1-its a 5 COLOR patch
2-Modern Hockey collectors/blackhawks fans/toews collectors
3-I'm bidding on one of the sickest hockey patch rookie auto cards on the market
Sure it is only rare because it is produced to be instantly rare, but whatever floats the buyers boat.
Honestly most cards are not gonna be worth too much 10 or 20 years from now since we will all be either dead or living in a manner straight out of the book/movie The Road.
it's not that out to lunch, insanely popular set, wasn't that long ago that the Ovechkin and Crosbys were both around $10k, right?
Unsold at $999
3-color patches are lame. 5-color patches are awesome.

Is this the card that was 10K?
$688
Might give a good picture of where the Toews card will be in a couple years
$6,600 is rather high for a modern card. Certain Exclusions do apply (auto's of Ruth, Gehrig, Mathewson, Johnson)

No. Ovechkin's base card is still valued at $5,500, that one is an insert set from his rookie year that only books at $550, so the seller did well with it.
The best super-premium rookies from a given year from all sports are traditionally worth into the thousands. For instance, look up a Tebow National Treasures, a Lebron, Durant, Rose, or Griffin from Exquisite, or some other The Cup rookies.
National Treasures Tebow $650
No Lebrons for sale or sold recently.
Kevin Durant $3,400
Derrick Rose $3,600
Griffin $4,000
Taylor Hall $3,800
Tavares $1,850
The Toews does seem a bit high; the flamboyant patch probably contributed to this, though like I said I wouldn't be comfortable with the authenticity unless it was slabbed.
This said, I still think dropping $6,600 on a modern hockey player is a foolish gamble. Could it be worth more someday? Yes. Could it be worth a hell of a lot less? Yes.

<< <i>Wow, those are some crazy prices. I wonder what my Young Guns rc would sell for if I ever decided to ever part with it. Mine is a pop 1/1.

The Ovechkin RC that used to sell for 10K is This one.
Odds are light that the Toews RC is heading in that direction. I'm not saying it hasn't topped out, but he's a) A Canadian player (that still counts for a ton amongst most hobbyists), and b) he plays for an Original 6 team. A lot of people see him as the heir-apparent to Yzerman; if that bears out this card will more-or-less be bulletproof.

<< <i>Is Hockey a sport? Do you still have to pay money to see it played? Doesn't bowling earn better ratings than Hockey? May be I can get a Peter Weber officially signed and PBA match used 5 color piece of bowling glove for $5k (may be $10k for a graded version)? Or may be a dual auto Walter Ray Williams, Jr. and Peter Weber PBA match used bowling score card with 2 x 300 games on it as an insert? That would be more impressive. Meatloaf >>
Is football a sport? With all the changes in it I'd rather watch a hockey game then a football one. What is the only sport that is well known in North America and Europe (here's a hint its played on ice)?

+1, post season hockey over post season football any day.

Curling is more well known than Hockey in Europe and North America.
