Army 2011 Commemorative Half...Utlra Low Mintage Significant?

RichRRichR Posts: 3,913 ✭✭✭✭✭
If this has already been discussed...sorry for the repeat post as I didn't see anything when I searched for it.

According to CW the Unc half has the lowest mintage (39,461) of the modern era while the proof isn't very far behind at 68,349. Not bad for coins that originally cost about $20 bucks not long ago.

If you mean in terms of value than Mintage is not as important as (in this order):

    1. Series Demand
    2. # Surviving.

I also think most are scruffy...might be good for condition rarities...haven't checked the pops.

  • It's got quit a pop on price now, but longer term popularity matters. This was an ugly coin. I new it had a low mintage. Maybe I missed a flipping oppurtunity, but the design looks cheap.

Originally they actually were only $15.95. I did this thread about them being a potential big winner back in September that went pretty much ignored. image

I currently have 181 of them (180 raw, one PCGS MS69) and I can tell you scuffy is how they come. The field on the obverse between 8:00 and 10:00 seems to have a lot of scuffs on it. There are no MS70s and a heck of a lot of MS68s to MS69 ratios, at least from PCGS. PCGS has graded just over 200 MS69 while across the street there's about 2000 ER MS69s. I'd be curious to see the quality of those from a sample of about ten. They fetch about $55 raw at the moment.

Off topic - I have one of the $1 silver unc Medal of Honor coins. Do you know the mintage on those?

Doesn't that statement sum up the last 100+ years of collecting image?

I purchased 65 of the Army halves. Scruffy is an understatement.
  • The thing about the Army 2011 commerative half even if it is scruffy, wouldn't that meam that the MS 70 and 69 coins would command respectable value in years to come. Get half of what you have graded and sit back and wait for the appreciation to begin.

I feel that the same thing will come again this year with the new commerative half dollar. I feel that a lot of people will pass up the clad half dollars and those that do gather these little darlings into their vaults should do all right if done in moderation over a period of time. But when they first come out and then towards the end of the run.

Could be. A loaf of bread might run $5,000.

I'm stunned at how these have done in the aftermarket. I ordered 1 on Dec 10th ( along with a few other items - proof sets, $1 coins, mint sets ). It seems like the package got ripped open by FedEx and the USPS boys maybe started putting the contents in their pockets.

I got a claim in. Maybe in 6 months they will even get me a credit or refund. image

Looks like I'm getting one of those Army Halfs ( image WHY DIDNT I ORDER 500 of THEM ! )after all. The Mint is resending my entire order of " last chance " items. Guess I'm to get some of the extras they keep for damaged orders. Really cool !

Can't wait to see these Coins. image
