Whatever happened to Mexican gold?

Don't know why this never occurred to me before, but I don't recall seeing any REALLY circ gold from the "hand on book" or balance scale period. I've seen lots of uncs and high grade stuff, but no worn pieces.
And at the same time I see lots of heavy circ colonial portrait gold.
Anyone know the Mexican gold story?
