Jefferson FS Details?

Hello Everyone,

I just got a nice new pick up for my Type Set and was pretty excited about it. Anyone know more details than I do about this FS designation? I am wanting to get very very nice examples of each coin for my type set, and seeing a first year issue for the Jefferson series w/ FS seemed only fitting. How rare are they? PCGS has them valued at $130 in my grade. Opinions?

Thanks!
Jeff

    Lehigh96,

Super articles! baseballjeff, this should cover it for everything except price. A nice MS65FS 1938 should be in the $100 to $140 range. Look at a bunch of them before buying one. Pay on the higher end for one that pops with luster, strike and, as Lehigh96 shows in his pictures, full steps! If you see an MS66FS example with the same pazzaz, you should be able to add it to your set for a little less than double the MS65FS price.

    Good luck

In general, agree with Keets! But I have bought a few coins form this seller.

baseballjeff - You got a great buy if it meets the criteria for your Set. Don't buy the plastic! If the coin is not all there, send it back and keep looking.

Lehigh, thank you for that awesome link! That was a great read! Now it's got me looking forward to, and nervous to look at my new coin coming i the mail! I found it interesting how it mentioned PCGS being a little more lenient than NGC. And PCGS graded coins are carrying more of a premium? I wonder if and/or how NGC will ever pass up PCGS.

A true FS Reverse of 1938 must have full separation between the 4th and 5th step beneath the 3rd pillar. Otherwise, you'll likely end up with a majority rules example so don't be surprised when you find that segment is missing and confused because it was designated FS anyway.

leothelyon, awesome slide show! Wow, this seems like a really fun, and challenging set! I am having pretty darn high standards for my Type Set, and hope the Jefferson I picked out will be a nice one!

I took that page off the website 2-3 weeks ago so it's not viewable but yet there it is (my collection). The tab for that page doesn't even show.....but the collection does. I'm gld you liked the slideshow. I need to cut the price for that set in half since one of the big coins went bye bye.

But don't let my high standards disappoint you when you receive your coin. It's more of an accepted definition of the Reverse of 1938 steps. By whom, we'll never know.

Yes, looks nice! Great pick-up for your Type Set. Good luck with the rest!

Dang, I was really hoping you had that quarter segment in the steps. Would have been worth over 10X what you paid.

Please don't believe everything you see on a slab, this was not graded as a FS and IMHO I think it is.

Perhaps NGC thought that coin was only a 5FS coin due to a bridge of the 5th & 6th steps. The coin was graded circa 1992-1995 (NGC 5 Slab) and NGC did not start recognizing 5FS until Feb 2004.

NGC didn't know any more about full step Jefferson nickels than a beginner collector. What a joke that was back then! They actually believed they could just grade the 6 step coins and let PCGS grade 5 step coins. Well, that idea didn't last very long as they slowly got educated.
