Card Show Pick-Ups and Tons Of Pictures From The Show This Past Weekend

Just came back from a card show on Fri and Sat and I picked up some stuff. Of course some are better than others but I'm still happy with my overall Pickups. I also decided to take my camera this time and take some pictures of the card show for those who haven't been to some in years or for others who unfortunately don't have access to one in their areas. These pictures were taken as the show was winding down Saturday afternoon. I wish I would of taken some on Friday because it was a mad house. Kind reminded me of when I was a kid. JSA and Beckett were also on hand. I decided to pop my cherry and also sub about 4 cards with a 20 day turnaround. Ill post those when they arrive.

Ill start off with my pick ups first followed by some pictures from the show.

Thanks for checking out and I hope you guys out there enjoy image

Looks like fun Marc, where was the show located?

Wow, $6 boxes of '90 UD French high numbers. Those were $10 per pack at one time. And those '90 Leaf boxes were what, $400+ in the day?

Nice cards you picked up. I also recently picked up a 1992 Topps traded set - finally!. Thanks for sharing the pics of the show as well. Its always cool to see what shows and dealer offerings look like in other areas around the country.
  • Nice Rookie pick ups Foo!!! Thanks for sharing. Looks the dealers where stacked in there good. I'm sure it was a great show.

Good luck with your first sub!!! image

  • Glad you guys liked the pictures. I always care to see stuff like this when poeple post just to see the atmosphere and prices too.

The show is located in S. Florida. I believe we even have about 1 or 2 other board members who attends as well.

I was kinda interested in the box of 90 Leaf but I thought he was asking a little too much than what I was willing to pay. $48 I think he said. Its not bad the key cards are 2 $12 according to bv that can be had for about $6 each individually. Not only that but those 2 key cards are divided between series 1 and 2 so really, to pay $48 for only a $12 bv card wasn't worth it imo. For 35-40, I would of probably gone for it.

I did get a box of 91 Upperdeck for $5 and that's how I pulled out the Jordan. Horrible centering though.

I have to say I am impressed. We used to have nice shows up here in Michigan back in the day.Now we have Gibralter shows which I rarely attend anymore.
Many of the better dealers dropped setting up.
By the way your cards are nice.

  • Yep...the old Troy Hilton and Dearborn Hyatt shows were awesome.

I actually set up for the first time at Gibralter last week. Fun to be on the other side of the table for once.

That's a nice 73 Ryan...I'd get that thing subbed. Any grade 7 and up and you are going to do pretty well.

You wouldn't happen to be the guy I was talking to who lived in a condo near Comerica Park?

Wow!...small world. You probably remember me..... I was the guy who bought the box of loose 1984 Donruss cards.
  • I sure do. It was great talking with you. We are going to set up at the Mt. Clemens show in April. Maybe we'll see you again.

It was great talking to you there as well. I haven't been out to the Mt. Clemens show in a while, as it is a good hour or longer drive...but maybe I'll go to that one.

By the way, I can appreciate the fact you are a George Brett fan from Michigan. I am a huge fan as well. It must be out of pure respect and admiration. Brett was absolutely automatic in clutch situations against the Tigers throughout his career.

Cool...yeah, even though I grew up on the Tigers...Brett was always my favorite player as a kid. Always went and saw him play at Tiger Stadium...and made several trips out to KC to see him. So clutch...and such a pretty swing. I loved the way he played the game. I was at his last game Tiger Stadium and he hit 2 HR's...one to LF and one to RF...the Tiger fans gave him a standing ovation. Pretty cool.
  • The kid was actually the son of the guy handing him the money. We thought it was be "cute" to have the kid with a load of cash as if he was selling to a buyer.

Glad you guys are enjoying the photos. Definitely brings me back to great memories. I remember card shows where everywhere back in the day - outlet malls, bowling alleys, hotels, you name it. Im very fortunate that we have a show - and a nice big one with lots of variety. On Friday nights, regular Joe's can purchase tables for only $10! They also feed everyone for free. This Friday they had Chicken Fingers and Fries. $2 draft beers = Heaven image

Looks like you had a fun time. Looking at some of those display cases I'm going to guess the prices that some guys had on their cards was very high. Nice Ryan you picked up ... show us if you get it slabbed.

    Very nice pickups!

The Jordan SP brought back memories!

Thanx for sharing the pics of the displays - unless I come with a wantlist - I wind up just walking around starring at the cards.

i just wanted to say that the thing to keep in mind when "pricing out" old wax is to remember that you are paying for the thrill of opening it. Pretty much anything made before 1990 UD Hi# (start of the true gambling aspect of this hobby) would be a "bad rip" because you can buy just about anything in any possible box for less then the cost of the box.

Memories cannot be bought for any price.

Thats so true. I purchased 3 wax boxes.

    91 Upperdeck for $5

89 Topps - That was my favorite one opening up from all 3. Every pack I ripped open brought back memories when I was 9 years old and when life seemed so much simpler and things like homework were my biggest worry. lol

86 Topps for $5 - This was the year I started buying cards and I didn't know who was who. I did pick up a lot of cards from that set that I remember use to wanting such as the Mattingly, Strawberry, Gooden and the Clemens.

I used to love going to the Gibraltar shows there back in the mid to late nineties, I lived less than two miles away! Now I live in the pro sports wasteland that is Iowa. We have a couple shows around here during the year but vintage is rarely present and usually no more than 30 tables at best. Thankfully the Chicago shows aren't too far away when I need a show fix.

I went Friday night and Saturday. I picked up 2 cases of 2012 topps Jumbo (nothing too great in them although I did get and already sell a squirrel). Also got a few other items including some star racks i posted on the Unopened pack thread. It was a REALLY good show....the quality of dealers was as good as any they have ever had here.
  • I saw the one far off picture and said "junk wax!" and then the close-ups. I love that stuff.

  • Thanks for sharing. I too have fond memories of all the card shows back in the day. The internet has ruined all of that.
I used to have a blast traveling up and down the east coast. Nice to see there are still small shows out there.
  • I have a lot of fond memories of card shows. That was my life when I was 10-14 years old.

The internet has ruined everything....there's aspects of cards shows you can't recreate with a computer. It's kind of sad. 1991 Upper Deck brings back memories....that Jordan was red hot.

1990 Leaf is a pretty good buy. It's not quite "junk"...like 1990 Donruss or Fleer. The Thomas to me is iconic. I remember putting the 90 Leaf minor stars in sleeves...like the carlton fisk or ripken. Remember when Beckett use to list all those for $1-$3? 1990 was a fun era for baseball.

I'd have gone bonkers on that stack of junk wax.

I'm happy that we don't have any decent shows here. My wife would have me sleeping in my car in no time.
