Okay so I got $2k to spend on 1 card 1900-1970, what do I get?

Let's say I had $2k to spend on one card, any card, any sport. Something cool to show the kids and grand kids, so someone famous a plus. Rookie card a plus. What would you buy

T-206 Ty Cobb
86-87 Fleer Jordan

This is real and I want to do it, so real suggestions please! (Not the finest known Billy Ripken FF card image)

I'd get an Aaron rookie because that is the only one I need of his basic Topps cards. It would have great "hey kids, check this out" appeal and with some patience I could probably find a nice PSA 7 for around 2K.
  • If you drop your silver purchase down to 100 oz instead of 200 oz you could buy a few more cardsimage

I would look for the best 51 Mantle I could find for the price you are looking to spend.

I was thinking a 1951 Mantle as well. However, there are many different good choices you can make. A few off the top of my head:

    1938 Goudey Joe Dimaggio
    1939 Play Ball Ted Williams
1948-49 Leaf Babe Ruth or Jackie Robinson

    1957-58 Topps Bill Russell

    1966-67 Topps Bobby Orr

As a HUGE fan of THE MICK I am partial, but I would go for either:

    '51 Bowman PSA 3 or
    '52 Bowman PSA 7

I know you said only 1 card, but with $2K you could pick up:
'54 Red Heart in PSA 8 AND
    '54 Dan-Dee in PSA 5.

GOOD LUCK! Let us know what you decide to buy and show us when you get it!
    STAY HEALTHY!

No, with $2k you can only afford 1.

    If it were me I'd go for one of the following;

    T206 Cobb
    33 Goudey Ruth #144
    48-49 Leaf Robinson
    T206 Cy Young
    33 or 34 Goudey Gehrig

With 2K to spend you can find nice examples of any of those listed. Above all though, spend wisely on an example that has high end appeal for the grade you chose. Eye appeal is everything to me. I'd rather overspend on a "3" with fantastic eye appeal then get a great deal on a low end "4". Might take some patience but well worth it. That's just me though. Good luck on whatever you decide. And of course show us what you get.

1955 Topps Roberto Clemente RC, PSA 7. Impossible to go wrong with this purchase...although it might be a bit higher than $2k. A classic card that will not only hold value, but will easily continue to go up.
  • The silver deal is already done and I feel it will be a big winner long term so I wouldn't drop it no matter what. What about basketball or football, even hockey, haven't really heard much here. I don't knwo much about cards, except for my box of 20 I built and sold.

My favorites (assuming nicely centered) would be:

    1957 Topps #95 Mantle PSA 8
    1962 Topps #200 Mantle PSA 8
    1963 Topps #537 Rose RC PSA 8
    1967 Topps #581 Seaver RC PSA 8.5
    1970 Topps #462 Aaron AS PSA 9

The 57 Mantle and the 63 Rose would probably use the full $2K. 62 Mantle is probably in the $1400-$1500 range.
Seaver RC would probably run about $1500 (don't think you'd get a 9 for $2k, maybe $2.6k-$2.8k). Aaron AS (if you
can find this elusive pop 3) would be around $1700-$1800.

  • Here are a few suggestions:

    1933 Goudey Ruth or Gehrig
T206 Cobb, Walter Johnson or Christy Mathewson
    1940 Play Ball Joe Jackson
1951 Bowman Mantle and Ford Rookie's
    1939 Play Ball Ted Williams

    Autographed photo's
    Babe Ruth
    Lou Gehrig

    Good luck with your decision.

For hockey, you can't go wrong with a 1979 Gretzky rookie. A nice PSA 8 OPC is about $1200 or a PSA 9 Topps is around $2000.

If it must be one card. I would personally go with the best Hank Aaron rookie I could get for the two grand.

If I could go with more than one card I would go with a

Hank Aaron 1954 Topps Rookie PSA 4.5 600ish
Pete Rose 1963 Topps Rookie PSA 6- 500ish
Walter Payton 1976 Topps Rookie PSA 8 170-200
Michael Jordan 1986-87 Fleeer Rookie PSA 8 600-700

Although I like the ruth, gehrig, 51 mantle suggestions too, I think for a "collection centerpiece" and something to "show off" to the grand kids and friends you should try to find a card you can afford in a psa 5 or better (preferably a 6). I collect the rookie cards of hall of fame baseball players, and I have mays, aaron, and clemente. But all 3 are psa 4 or below. I love the cards, and they have character, for that age, but when I show them off to my kids or to friends who aren't collectors, they usually are a little ho-hum about them.

    So with all that said.

1951 bowman willie mays psa 5/6
    1954 hank aaron psa 6/7
    1955 clemente psa 6/7
1958 jim brown highest grade you can get.

Another thought is looking at some of the game used memorabilia out there, some really cool stuff that would be great as a centerpiece and conversation piece. For around 2k I've seen signed game worn rickey henderson jerseys, and other mlb authenticated items that will even tell you the game the equipment was used in.

Anyway, just my opinions. Good luck with your search, and definitely post pictures of your purchase.

A Ruth, Cobb, Wagner, Mathewson and Johnson.
