Does grading a modern card really raise value?

I got a nice hit the other day and I was wondering if it was worth sending in to get graded. I'm going to turn the card over and sell it eventually and I'd like to maximize its value of course.

Do you see a significant change in value when a modern card is graded?

Here's my hit (Dirty Scan):

The focus on modern cards is on grading of rookies. A post-career autograph of a superstar doesn't have much of a grading premium, if any.

that card has great centering and corners, a psa 10 would sell for more than a raw copy, lawnmowerman collects smith...
  • If you are going to sub, send to BGS. BGS 9.5 or 10 would get you enough extra $$ to make it worth the trouble.

That card is worth grading. It is a Hall of Famer, has an auto, and looks like it would pull a decent grade.

I don't think it matter if you use BGS or PSA for modern non-rookie cards. In fact PSA may be get more bids since many player collectors use the PSA registry.

Based on my experience... and sadly, I submit a lot of modern stuff like this...

If you get a PSA 10, yes it will command a premium and be a quick, easy sell. Any grade other than a 10 though, better off just selling raw and saving the fees. On numerous occassions I've cracked cards out just to get them back to raw when they came back PSA 9 or less for this very reason.

PS - That card looks like a possible 10... I'd sub it!

Hi Eric, let me ask you this. Im sitting on a large amount of chrome refractor RCs to grade. Im always concerned about the "chrome lines" I call them. If you look at the card side to side it appears off. Look at the elbow, the chrome line is to the right of the elbow, as is the right edge. I dont sub cards like this because I think its off and it wont pull a 10. Am I wrong in thinking this? I think its a great card, and alot of people like graded inserts like this for display and protection reasons.

    Wow - nice card.

    Send to PSA?

I say - check with Matt aka Lawnmowerman - he's the man!

Honestly, that's something I've never really looked at or considered. I'd have to check what Chrome cards I have graded... for me, I've always focused on centering and corners... and don't sub cards if they have the gunk that can often be found on the surface of these cards (if I can't rub it off, I won't sub it). I've always had pretty good success focusing on those three things to get my 10's... the lines never crossed my mind... but given that, I'd have to believe it's not a factor, but I certainly can't state that with 100% confidence.
  • I have found that grading and getting high grades (9 and higher) on star autographs DOES in crease value. I had a blue #/10 Peyton Manning auto... Raw I couldn't even get $75... Graded it went for like $120 at a 9.
  • 8's hopefully you get raw price
    9's you make a little
10's well you can double, triple, quadruple or more!!!

I sell modern Jeters, Rodriguez, Pujols, Mantle, Ruth's, and base cards for $15 plus all day long.

    Just sold a Jeter 2011 Bowman for $20 last week. That's a $1/$2 card.

PSA doesn't grade against a refractor line if it doesn't take away from the overall esthetic of the card. BGS will grade against it no matter how well it's placed...
  • Do they sell as much as BGS, sometimes.

I've been watching closely on the 9.5 sales compared to PSA 10's. The PSA 10's have been going for more money on certain cards.

Just a few years ago a BGS 9.5 modern would almost always sell for more than a PSA 10.

Now it's much different.... Does BGS modern 9.5's overrall still get more, yes, will that sustain itself for years to come, well I don't know.

Bottom line is I don't really care. I love PSA, I don't hate Beckett, just I dunno. Sometimes simplicity is eases the mind even if a few dimes are left on the table....

    To each his own.

AS of this post these were listed on Ebay.

    PSA 10's...85,983

    BGS 9.5's...25,502

Sub it to either BGS or PSA. My first choice would be BGS since guys doing the Emmitt Smith PSA registry cannot add it to their set(post playing years).

If it grades anything other than a BGS 9.5 or PSA 10, crack it and sell it raw.

If you don't want to go through the trouble of grading and possibly cracking, sell it raw. Emmitt's new auto cards sell for a ton of money in raw condition. In fact, most guys that collect new Emmitt's such as this prefer it to be raw.
  • Only grade modern if there is a good chance for a 10. Otherwise you'll lose money. Exception is Jordan RC due to do many counterfeits.

As everyone has stated 10's sell for good money but 9's and down mmight as well be cracked and kept raw.

That being said I see a slight diamond cut, so I'd just leave it as is.
  • I would say go with bgs then because the auto can possibly grade as a 10 and raise the sv of the card
