    Mid- to late-19th century.

    I'm getting an 1870s-1880s vibe from that.

    Collector since 1976. On the CU forums here since 2001.

    The shield is very common with Uruguayan coins. The seller listed 1805 but the first Ive seen was the 1844 Peso fuerte. Even that has Republica Oriental del Uruguay which is the country decalred name however this piece has Estado del Uruguay which is state so I was wondering if this may have predated the 1844s

    Mmm... maybe. Sounds like perhaps you're a little further along in actually researching, whereas my initial post was based on gut instinct alone, from the style of the thing. Usually my gut instincts are pretty good (sometimes eerily accurate) when it comes to roughly dating stuff, but I've been badly wrong on occasion too, of course. Guess I'm an idiot savant in that regard.
