Well, I just started selling on ebay again...an observation..

So, back to selling again because I want to thin out my collection and also get rid of "garage sale" type stuff. My observation in such a short time is that you cant win against the buyers on ebay. They really do ding you the stars and for who knows what reason. I think society has become that people love to see others fail. Now, Im not worried about it because I do not plan on becoming a power seller or anything of the sort but I can surely understand the gripes. Ive only sold about 30 items in the past 60 days. Everything I have sold has been mailed the next day, packaged well in a bubble envelope, and with delivery confirmation. So, in other words, they couldnt get it any sooner or safer. Of course they cant ding me on shipping cost because I do all free shipping.
It is truly amazing to me how much star dinging goes on and I know for no reason. No one has sent me even a slight complaint and thats because I dont give them any reason to have a complaint. I have just decided there are about 25% of the population out there who are just mean spirited and angry. Little do they know that it doesnt hurt my feelings and they are doing it to make themselves feel better.
The point of me saying this is that I can really understand why people complain about it when ebay relies so heavily on those stupid star ratings. Lots of good sellers losing their "cough::bullsh*t:::cough bonus" due to this.
Good luck to all of you guys who really do lots of selling on ebay.

With the government getting involved this year and sucking all the fun out of Ebay, I am unsure what direction Ebay is going in the future. I am not betting on their continued success however.....
1) you are absolutely right...
2) Think of it this way.... Amazon is like going to the mall.... Ebay is like going to the flea market.
Nothing you can do.
<< <i>Some buyers wouldn't give 5 stars even if the package included a hand job from the mail lady.

Outside of ebay, I rarely give "5 star" ratings for surveys. At least with ebay I understand that if I give 4 stars, which is still an above average rating in theory, that it will hurt the seller.
Buying into any of it is the biggest scam. I see people wet their pants because they lost their perfect feedback and are going to pay another 3% in fees or have their stars dinged or have some buyer scamming people and on and on. The best way to avoid this is to NOT SELL ON EBAY

<< <i>If 5 stars is the only acceptable rating they should just have two selections, 5 stars or no stars. To some people 4 stars seems to be a great rating and 3 stars may still be saying the service was fine, but nothing spectacular.

Exactly. Every time someone posts a thread complaining about getting their stars "dinged" I've asked what that means? Apparently it means getting anything less than a full 5/5. I think that goes against the way most people think of rating systems. Typically, people are familiar with the Likert scale with 5 options, the middle choice being a neutral option. So, if service was fine, but not outstanding, you'd rate it a 3/5, if it was above-average 4/5 and exceptional 5/5. Most of the time ebay transactions are 3 or 4. Good or above-average. But that's not the way Ebay has their rating system set up. It's an unfair system to the sellers who rely on having high ratings for discounts, but I imagine Ebay knows that and that's the reason they do it that way.

of course they do...more dings = higher profit for them % wise...

<< <i>Ebay was a lot better when the seller had the option to leave negative fb. >>
Perhaps there is a bit of truth to that.
It was definitely better for the sellers who could mislead customers, give poor service, or even outright cheat their customers then dare them to complain.

As a buyer, i never had that problem.
If they went back to the old system, a disgruntled buyer could always get a refund if he wasnt happy.
