How a sports pin can lead you down a whole different road - to a Radio Icon - this is more for the b

Hi everyone - I know this is off the wall stuff - but I just wanted to illustrate how a certain niche in your collecting might just lead to another.

I was the underbidder on a neat baseball pin which was broken - that led me down a road to a radio icon who was the hero of children!

It was Uncle Don's Spalding Athletic Club - had no idea who Uncle Don was and thanx to the internet - I'm a fan!

Uncle Don Carney - he aired on WOR (50,000 watt radio station) NYC from 1928 to 1947 - and produced a half hour daily children's show.

Carney came out of Vaudeville and IMO was a consummate huckster promoter. He got his name on numerous products and created children's clubs to promote those products.

His show hosted a "Talent Quest" and a "Healthy Child Contest" - one of his clubs included the popular "Earnest Savers Club" which encouraged people to open accounts with the Greenwich Savings Bank.

He opened his show with the same Song. Since my old bakelite radios can't talk, this is the next best thing!

Here's a photo of Don promoting easter egg dye.

And, I wound up picking up a few pieces that were part of the promotions and other items he put his name on:

First - the Earnest Saver that was so popular:

And a couple of his clubs - they provide a nice premium pin - I've got my eye on a few more - this has become interesting.

I found he has some recordings that I may get into.

The cod liver oil must've been a tough sell!

He did promote BOSCO which was a favorite of mine as a child - you can still buy it on-line today.

And here's a book he produced - this is from the big little books of that era:

This guy was incredible - the Mr Rogers of the radio days! And P.T. Barnum had nothing on his 'self promotion!' He must've had like 10 clubs which I'm sure he received nice compensation from.

I'll be interested to see what else I can come up with!

BTW - there's urban legend that Carney finished a show - didn't realize the microphone was still on and said - "There! That ought to hold the little b**tards." Uncle Don said it never happened which is supported by the fact that there's never been a record of complaints - which I'm sure would've happened back then.

  • I was around 10 years old at the time of that utterance by Uncle Don and I can remember asking my mom what did he say.. As for complaints, in that era we didn't even know we could have complained much less to who we could complain..

Here is a link from Snopes about the veracity of the utterance http://www.snopes.com/radiotv/radio/uncledon.asp

    Mike,

It was long before my time, but that is a great story. It is always nice to pick up remembrances of seemingly simpler and happier times. Thanks for taking the time to share and good to hear from you again.

The ' Earnest Saver Banks ' are really neat ! They reminded me of all the banks we had in the late 50's and 60's ! The most popular for us here in the Midwest ( Springfield , Illinois ) , was Abe Lincoln banks !
