Questions about 1985 1986 Star basketball & Michael Jordan

I've got someone who has offered me the following: 1985 Stars Bulls 12-card set in bag with Jordan, 1986 Star 10-card Mcihael Jordan set in bag, 1985 Star Houston set with Olajawon in bag, and 1990 Star 76ers set in bag. All sets in bags and unopened. I haven't seen them.

SMR doesn't list these and eBay Completed Sales is no help. A several month old Beckett had the !985 Bulls set at $2,000-2,600, had the 1986 Jordan set at $350-550, and had the 1985 Houston set at $100-200. Are these prices too high, as are most price guides prices? Does the 76ers set have any value? Can anyone help me evaluate these items for possible purchase? I am, of course, looking to buy these wholesale and then offer them for sale elsewhere. Thanks.

Always looking for Mantle cards such as Stahl Meyer, 1954 Dan Dee, 1959 Bazooka, 1960 Post, 1952 Star Cal Decal, 1952 Tip Top Bread Labels, 1953-54 Briggs Meat, and other Topps, Bowman, and oddball Mantles.

Send Cdsnuts a PM. If I remember correctly he's very knowledgeable about Star Co issues

    Judge,

I still have the Hank Aaron rookie PSA 4MK you sold me.

On the Star cards, the Jordan has been faked so much I was always afraid to buy them to flip back when I did that.

I could not tell the difference Judge. I am hoping somebody will have more information for you so you can tell if they are legit or not and make a few bucks.

The valuable jordan is card number 101 from the 84-85 set. The second and 3rd year cards are not really worth the gamble in my opinion. I don't know enough about them to help with identifying fakes. That jordan is the last big basketball rookie from the 80s that I need for my basketball part of my collection. Its last because it goes for over a g even in a bgs 4. I have a bunch of the Star cards at bgs now. Hopefully they all get slabbed.

  • The Star Co cards from the 80s are a tough issue. I always look at these on eBay and shy away. I know they are being graded by BGS now but the fact that PSA won't touch them makes me nervous. I would think if you are dealing with high end BGS slabbed cards you should be good though. They are easy to fake and unlike 86 fleer issues, there are no easy signs to spot the fugazzis to my knowledge. Great cards though. Buy from reputable people and buy graded would be my advice.

I consigned a complete 1984-85 set and a complete 1985-86 set in the original bags to Mile High a few months ago, and combined they went for around $3700 before the premium. I was a little disappointed in the final price, but not too much because A) I didn't have to pay any fees and B) I didn't have to worry about someone buying it on eBay and either complaining or switching out the real ones with fakes and filing a SNAD case.

    Some info about these sets:

I purchased mine back at the time of release from a Star distributor, each set came in two halves (two separate releases). In the mid-1990s, either whoever owned Star or someone who bought the rights to the cards (I forget which) printed more sets and sold them. They are almost identical to the originals except that I have been told that the bags the cards were sold in back in the 1980s are significantly thicker and have a different texture than the ones used in the 1990s. Besides the difference in the bags, since the cards were printed from the same plates, there is no discernible difference. I believe that besides the "reissues," there are also flat-out fakes that have significantly reduced printing quality.
