Goldberg Long Beach sale (Helem Collection--gold coins))

RYKRYK Posts: 35,799 ✭✭✭✭✭
Now that it is nearly over (my coins of interest have all sold), I must say that this was a bonanza for enthusiasts of dirty No Motto era and southern gold. I cannot remember such an extensive collection of coins in this price and grade range (other than mine, of course image ). I do not yet know precisely which coins I have won, as I did not get to speak to my agent after he viewed the lots, but if the coins checked out as expected, there should be anywhere from three to five coming to me next week.

I personally thought that there were some great circulated coins, including some inexpensive ones, that slipped through the cracks. I will post photos of coins won, coins lost, and missed opportunities. If only I had Longacre money to spend on coins. image

I am still waiting on my lots of interest to come up. I figure that they are going at a rate of 98 lots per hour.I have never seen an auction go so slow.I am glad that I am not sitting in the auction room.

Look forward to seeing them. Non-gold, but I thought the 1936 and 1938 unopened proof sets were pretty cool.

There were 20+ coins that I would have liked but narrowed it down to 4. Hopefully, I'll end up with a couple of them, unless they end up in the RYK museum. image

Dude, if you mention proof sets again, I am going to move to have you kicked out of the USRGCCC-EIEIO

Hey, RICK - I couldn't bid because of my most recent GOLD purchase. image

My impression from the results was that the prices realized for the most part were quite strong.
The cac'd pieces plowed their way along and even the non cac'd stuff did ok.

I am curious which pieces you believe slipped through the cracks...

I picked up a couple of pieces myself including one very cool (in my opinion) variety on a 43-o $2.5
may the fonz be with you...always...

That was one of them, and there were several 43-Os that looked good from the photos that went cheap.

I was a non participant as I am rebuilding my cash reserves since I did an awful lot of buying in 2010 and 2011.

RYK, the gold coins I bought at the ANA Chicago auction all CAC'd.

Okay, I got the final word from Doug today. These are the coins that I won:

He bought several other coins from this sale. If you have been looking for a mid-grade Charlotte or Dahlonega QE or HE, this might be an excellent opportunity to acquire a fresh example. Doug usually posts coins to his website over the weekend after the show. By all accounts, this collection has been flying under the radar screen for decades.

Gorgeous lot of coins RYK, I especially love the color and the eye appeal on the 1842-D and 1840-C. Congats to you on your pick-ups.
