1915-S Silver Pan Pac Half

rooksmithrooksmith Posts: 1,097 ✭✭✭✭
Hi all,

I made a bid on a coin, and won, which later I regretted when I spotted the obvious slide damage on the coin.

I'm wondering whether or not PCGS would give this a grade or body bag (genuine) it.

Honest Opinions appreciated:

I'm more concerned about the overall look of the coin. I think it'll come back altered surfaces.

I am trying to spot the obvious damage . . . and I'm not seeing it. I see some die polish in front of the face below ...IFIC, but slide damage would be on the high points and I am just not seeing it. It looks gradeable to me!

The slide marks under "CIFIC" in "PACIFIC" on the obverse would keep this in a genuine holder. The surfaces otherwise don't bother me as this issue didn't come with hard luster.

from what I can see, I agree with DRunner; those marks look like die polish to me; they don't appear to be on the devices.

Those are not die polish marks and not album slide marks.

looks more like die polish - but in all fairness, its a tougher call without the coin in hand- there are die polish lines between the letter in PACIFIC- and the could extend below in the field below

  • First thing I thought was die polish. Any other examples out there with this in the same location?

You'll see a few die polish marks on the reverse of Pan Pan halves but the obverse has a very even granular appearance.

It's hard to work from images in this case but I'm thinking gradable even if knocked down to AU grade.

I would love to have on of these in AU58 someday.image

Have to agree, the first thing I thought was "what slide marks"? Slide damage would be on the high points; that's die polish. Send it to PCGS, it looks good to me!
  • Right. The area where the marks appear is a low point, well-protected by the arm, the head and the lettering. Should be fine.

    Thanks for the feedback,

I will post some followup pictures and possibly a video (in sunlight!) to give a better view of the surfaces and the possible slide marks (die polish? - I hope!).

By the way, I really appreciate the expertise, and honesty on this site. Keep it up !!

  • The surfaces from the Great Southern picture look much different from the obverse photo you posted first.
