Question about 1974 wrong back error card

Going through cards last night, getting ready to submit an order to PSA. I have a couple thousand 1974 Topps commons from vending and although they made me a lot of $ through grading and getting 9's that I sold on eBay 8-10 years ago, I have not sent in any lately due to their high pops and current value as graded cards. However, I thought I'd check and see if there were any I wanted to include in my order. Just by chance I came upon a Cleveland Indians team card (normally #541) and noticed the back is #402 Jim Rooker. Anyone have any experience with wrong back cards and if they have any value? Does PSA grade them and identify the error? Thanks.

  • Going strictly by what I have seen on eBay, there is a market for mid sixties and older wrong back cards, but not so much the seventies and up unless the card involves a superstar.

i sent in a '74 George Foster with a Bill Buckner back and they rejected it.

still, one of my faves just for raw keepers.

Probstein123 has a handful of 1974 Topps wrong back cards in very high grade that are graded by SGC, so apparently they will grade wrong back cards.

I wouldn't grade them; the majority of collectors don't seem to care about wrong backs (particularly that time period; non stars)

Over the years I have acquired two 1974 Topps Harmon Killebrew front Ralph Garr back cards. Did a little research and it seems there are quite a few '74 "wrongbacks" out there.

Sent mine in to PSA as wrong backed cards, and they graded them a KIllebrew cards with no mention of the back. Guess they're not looking too close.

I was hoping to get them into the Killebrew Master Set, figuring to make some money on the extra one. Looks like that might take a while. image

I would imagine a high grade star player might be worth some nice change to the "oddball" collectors.

  • As a printing error this card would not be a master set card.

Having said that, and having collected tons of blank and wrong backs over the years -- there is nothing wrong is PSA grades these cards -- several of the E&V manuals mention which years have wrong/blank backs noted as exiting.

Actually not a lot of extra value but a fun collectible

I used to love your errors and variations column in beckett. Do you still work for them?

Glad your over hear, you have a lot of knowledge.
  • Thanks for the kind words -- I have not been at Beckett since 2009.

  • Just to confirm PSA doesn't grade wrong backs correct ? Got a Ripken from 91 with another player on back. Would be cool to have it graded just for the collection. I gather I could request 'authentic' on the label, but it is from the intensely popular and highly demanded 91 Bowman set. I guess if I did get it graded 'authentic' my colleciton would literrally decrease in value just by owning it. Right ?

Thanks you to anyone who can just confirm the door is shut on PSA grading wrong back cards. image
