In general, dies experience their greatest failures near the edge. This is why cuds are fairly common. The other thing that can happen is that, near the edge, the die can begin to buckle--this will manifest itself on a coin as well. Before massive failure occurs, the dies will experience wear (flow lines) and distortion in design elements near the edge (stars, letters).

When I have seen evidence of die failure on a Morgan, it has usually been manifested as cracks through stars.

Thanks for the PUP ( Pick up points )

Any other areas on modern silver coinage 1900 -1969 would be useful. I dont have nearly enough exposure to this and would like to learn more and experience more . And any help you guys and gals can provide would be a great help.

  • If I remember correctly, the 1958 type II Franklin had a lot of die chip variations in the EPU area.
  • i scored a nice 57D with a chip between the bust and R in trust. Ive been meaning to find one of those.

Anyone have an PUP on dimes and quarters ( silver) that are common places for die wear and possible chip finds. I hope to make this into something educational that many can benefit from.
