Do you find woodgrain toning on copper...

...attractive or unattractive?

I have my own personal feelings, but I'm curious as to where the forum-think is on this topic.

I said attractive. But that doesn't mean every single example. I've seen several that look nice that I wouldn't mind owning.

I usually don't like it much. On a rare occasion, it might look kinda good like on a nice Large Cent. But that's a rare exception (for me).

Love it. Just another one of those curious imperfections that adds so much to the charm and character of a coin.

I can't state that I find every woody attractive, so I'd have to say it depends on each coin in hand.

    Edited to add:

Just looking at that title I'm surprised it's being called "toning" as the streaks are due to a defect in the mixture process as there are impurities in the planchet.

Toning would be like getting a tan... The woodgrain streaks are to the bone.

It really depends on the coin.

If it overpowers the coin, then I'm not a fan.

Here are a couple of Woodgrain Indians I used to own. Truly regret ever selling them.

I like some wood grain toning, it all depends on the coin.
I actively collect, buy and sell US minted Philippine coins from 1903-1945. I am interested in anything during this period, Albums, Proof sets, collections, original rolls and bags, Cullion Leper colony coins etc.
Also a big fan of liberty seated coins.

I find it, but am neutral to it. As a component of eye appeal, it detracts for me.

The brighter areas of woodgrain toning are where there was more tin and zinc in the mixture. The darker areas are less alloy. When the ingot gets rolled out these high-alloy and low-alloy areas become elongated and turn into the woodgrain pattern. I think it is fine on BN and RB coins, but not on full red coins. The reason is that by definition a woodgrain-toned coin is toned, not full red.

With that explanation, is this the correct answer to the question?

Woodgrain toning only exists on bronze coins, not on coins that are 100% copper.

I find some of the very streaky and uneven woodgraining a bit less desirable... but it doesn't always have to look like that. Sometimes, the woodgrain is just very even and very attractive like this one:

Early S mint wheats have that, some are so dramatic it makes them hard to grade.

I think it's great! When I get around to buying a Linc for the type set it will be a wood-toned one.

I like it if it's consistent over the entire surface of the coin, especially on Indian Head cents.
