There are still treasures to be had on ebay

Link

I was the underbidder. The 1971 Topps box is quite rare.

Legendary Auctions

I have absolutely no idea why I didn't bid higher.

Also! This is my first post in over 6 months so... Hey everybody!!!

    Did you win it?
Is the 1971 missing that white box on the left? How does that affect the box value?

    Wow that blows.

Next time bid higher on something that sold for 14 times as much.

Man that would have been a sweet find.

I noticed he charges $12 for shipping. Highway robbery. 4.2 stars?

Edited to add: assumed you won it. Nevermind.

No, I was the underbidder. I thought a couple hundred bucks would be enough, I'm kind of kicking myself.

And yes, but not by any significant amount.

    Hey back!

You're right, you should have bid higher, but so should everybody else. The '71 Contest box is, as you say, exceedingly rare.

Topps lied, by the way, saying that 25 people would get their pictures put on Topps cards. They ended up doing that for only 15 kids, and two of them were from the same family! (Why do you continue to elude me April Bole?)

interesting. Is that the only sale of one of these? That is very high for a display box.
    I like this thread!

. What are the cards worth? and how many were made?

[I answered a couple of questions in a private message, but I'll reply here as well]

Like the box says, Topps intended to make these for 25 different kids, but probably due to lack of interest, they stopped after only 15. I talked to a dealer at one of the national conventions quite a few years ago, and he said that he had met Lisa Bole that same day. She told him that her mother entered the contest TONS of times, and was able to win for both of her daughters. She also told him that Topps sent the equivalent of one full sheet (132 cards) to each girl with their pictures on them.

They typically go for around $20 each, when you can find them. I'd gladly pay more than that for April Bole, since she's the last one I need.

  • Thanks for posting, I'm not into empty boxes but I'm sure thats a deal. Too bad Cal Ripken or Rickey Henderson didn't win the contest.

jason, it turns out that mark theotikos from legendary actually won the box lot tonight, so no matter how high you bid on it you still probably wouldve lost; he seems to win everything he sets out to, and i dont know what your high bid was but i'm sure his was in the thousands (and with the exception of the 71, all the other boxes in the lot were basically throwaways to him). in other words, maybe if you bid 3K you wouldve come out victorious, but anything less you probably still wouldve been the underbidder (ie, dont feel so bad!!!). the 71 box will likely end up in their next auction and probably sell for around what the one in their 2009 auction sold for; with the exception of the 69 and maybe 72 box the other eight boxes in the lot were redundant.

he must have every possible match for "topps display box" or "topps empty box" as a saved search (either that or he must scour the boards for boxes every minute on the minute because i do a search at least once a day, every day and never even saw this listing). whenever i come across a listing for a rare one that i missed he always ends up being the winner (although i'm sure i've scored a couple that he missed and wouldve wanted)(especially when theyre newly listed buy it nows that first appear at 3 in the morning when i'm about to go to bed).

  • I was a friend of the Bole family growing up in the 70's/80's in Los Alamitos. Lisa was even a babysitter for my sister and I for a period of time. I didn't realize the extent of this contest. I saw Lisa and I didn't know she had a card I thought it was just April. (I have one of April somewhere but no idea where). I found a picture of the card on her facebook page.

Wasn't that the same hat the David Wells ultimately owned and eventually auctioned off?
