When and how did the Mint start selling rolls?

CaptHenwayCaptHenway Posts: 32,695 ✭✭✭✭✭
Does anybody know when the Mint first started selling rolls of coins to collectors? I know they did the Westward Journey nickels that way, but weren't they doing the Kennedy Halves and Sacagawea Dollars earlier?

Were they always sold in two-mint pairs, one P and one D? If otherwise, how, please?

Likewise, when did they start selling the bulk bags of Kennedies and Sacagaweas, and what were the sizes? I'm pretty sure the Sagacaweas started out at 2,000 coin bags, because I remember buying in a bag at the coin shop that the guy had pulled 500 pieces out of. I ran the rest through the coin counter and came up 1,500 pieces, so I gave him cash for the face and later, when I was making up rolls, found a blank planchet!

What other size bags of halves and dollars were sold?

  • Hi Tom, I have a mint brochure form 1993 that offered SBA's
sealed 100 count bags ($110) and 2000 count bags ($2050)
    1979 p d s or 1980 p d s....
    No rolls were listed...

It sure seems like when the State Quarters came out 1999, you could buy Mint rolls ?

Were the 1999 SBA's also sold in bags directly to the public?

2002 Kennedys were available in Mint rolls. Before that, I'm not so sure. I don't believe that the Delaware quarters were available in Mint rolls.

Added, the 2001 Kennedys weren't available in Mint rolls until later.

Good point....I forgot about the Statehood quarters.

What is the earliest Mint-wrapped statehood quarter roll anybody has?

What were the "bumblebee rolls"? And when did they come out?

If you are referring to the first Sacs, my mom got them in 2000 with the release and gave me some, so I would say 2000.
However, these were from Walmart, so I am not sure if they qualify for what you are asking (Walmart had a deal with the mint to distribute these to the populous)

I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment

  • I believe the earliest mint wrapped state quarter rolls were 2000 New Hampshire. Sacs were also available in 2 roll sets starting in 2000.

Smoebody should be writing all this stuff down. image

It's remarkable how fast the important things about coins get lost; things like what circulates and its condition
seem to get lost almost as soon as the coins pass from circulation and is mostly irretreivable.

The mint sold little bags of pennies in 1972 (and '71 as well I believe).

I have 2 Texas rolls. Got them in Austin when they had a special event in 2004.
Not sure if they were rolled by the Mint or not. I don't think they are Mint wrapped as I have seen
rolls on ebay that have US Mint on them and these do not.

I can find 2000-dated NH and VA Mint-wrapped rolls on eBay, so assume they did the rest of that year. No 1999's.

    Does anybody know otherwise?

There certainly is nothing to recommend them and they are all corroded now.

No, the New Hampshire Rolls were the first in the State Quarters to be issued in Rolls from the Mint.

    I have them all... image

OK, the $25 bags of the Statehood quarters started with Delaware, but the mint-wrapped rolls did not begin until New Hampshire.

Have been told that the 1979 and 1980 SBA dollars came in $25, $100 and/or $2,000 bags. Anybody have these in any of the three sizes?
