Post a Coin with a Significantly Rotated Reverse

Here is my entry: an 1844-D half eagle from the North Georgia Collection. It wasn't in the 1999 Heritage FUN auction, but was sold privately the previous summer by the dealers who handled the collection (part of a fixed price list of North Georgia C- and D-Mint coins). The photography is courtesy of Todd Pollock (BluCC Photos).

    Cool piece GK... Very nice!

Here`s a proof 66RB Injun that I have that has the reverse rotation of 170 deg...According to Rick Snow`s red book about 15% are known for that characteristic... Wish i had a better pic of the rotation... I will have a better one...One day soon...

This is an 1872 Proof shield nickel with a doubled die and a nearly 180 degree rotated reverse (the photo indicates the rotation). What more could you ask for? image

I have only ever seen one of these.

Here's a great site on rotated reverses. It does have the OP's 1844-D Half Eagle listed.

I've got a 2-center having an ~180 degree rotation. Here's a not very good image of it sitting in a 7070. Don't know if the reverse or obverse rotated. image

A better presentation of the coin.

Another 1864 LM with 180 degree rotation. ANACS -58. Not as pretty as the one above but with a nice reverse die crack.

What sort of price premium is there on rotated dies?

This 1864 Bronze Indian cent is rotated 180 degrees aka "medal strike."

There's a little rotation on this one:

I specifically bought the example below so RWB would have an image for his Mint Error section in his Peace Dollar book.

RWB mentioned that it was just possible to rotate the digital images and that an actual rotated example wasn't needed.

Doh... I sold it shorty afterwards as rotated Peace $1's are not scarce.

I think this is the only coin I have with a "significant" rotation

Edited to say that I agree with Realone. Any rotation over 90 degrees is cool enough to make note of, otherwise <shrug>.

It's difficult to find a Ryal that doesn't have some rotation:

    When in doubt, don't.

This one I measure as 60 degrees CCW rotation. E in STATES is punched over an error A.

The subject of rotated die coins has long interested me, and I have spent many years seeking examples of rotated die half dimes. There are very few known examples of rotated dies in the Flowing Hair, Draped Bust, and even Capped Bust half dimes, but examples in the Liberty Seated series abound. It is interesting to me that most collectors refer to these anomalies as "Rotated Reverse" coins, even though we seldom know which die was improperly oriented in the coining press. This is due to our customary practice of examining a coin by looking at the obverse first, held with the obverse oriented upright, and then flipping the coin over in our hand, top over bottom, expecting to see the customary 180° 'coin' rotation used on United States coins. If there is any disorientation of the dies, we automatically assume that the reverse die was improperly oriented, and refer to the coin as a "rotated reverse" coin. Of course, unless we know with certainty which die was improperly oriented in the coin press, we can only properly refer to them as "rotated die" examples, in which the relative rotation of the dies is incorrect.

I have compiled a list of the Liberty Seated half dimes for which I presently own examples which exhibit significant rotation of the dies, as follows. I would be very interested to learn of additional examples which others have seen:

1837 Large Date V1 “Slightly CW”
    1837 Small Date V5 24° CW
    1838 V8 30° CW
    1839-O V3 All rotations seen
    1840-O No Drapery V8 20° CCW
    1841 “Slightly CCW”
    1844-O V2 180°
    1845 Shattered Reverse 20° CCW
    1847 “Slightly CCW”
    1848 Large Date V1 15° CCW
    1848 1848/7/6 V7a 20° CCW (Sometimes called V10)
1848 Far Right Date V9 “Slightly CW”
    1848-O V2 “Slightly CW”
    1848-O V5 20° CCW
1850-O Large O 30°CCW (Appears to be very rare)
    1850-O V4 Small O 18° CCW
    1853-O With Arrows 20° CCW
    1853-O With Arrows 90° CW (Added 8-8-07)
    1854 25° CCW
1854 30° CCW (Same variety as above?)
1854 40° CCW (Same variety as above?)
1854 50° CCW (Same variety as above?)
    1854-O With Arrows 70° CCW (Purchased 7-7-12)
    1856 100° CCW
1856 180° (Same variety as above?)
    1857 20° CCW
    1857 20° CW
    1857 30° CCW
1857 45° CCW (Same variety as above?)
1857 Unretouched Hub V1 170° CW (Sometimes referred to as V10)
    1860 ~60° CW (Added 3-21-10)
    1861 170° CW
    1862 40° CCW
    1865 V1 45° CW
1872-S MM Above Bow 15° CW
    1873-S V2 30° CCW

Whoa! Old Thread but it popped up when I actually had something to share.

1965 SMS with about 110 degrees of rotation.

Edited to say that I agree with Realone. Any rotation over 90 degrees is cool enough to make note of, otherwise <shrug>.

Do you think it's from the same dies? And for the longest time I thought I had something special. Oh well.

Here's another one of mine, a rare Dahlonega quarter eagle, ex-Harry Bass. The TrueView doesn't show the rotation, but the top of the eagle's head is pointed at approximately 3 o'clock.

I think we had a discussion once here about this and determined that the rotation was common for this date/variety.
