1960's proof sets in Capital Holders....questions

coinsarefuncoinsarefun Posts: 21,757 ✭✭✭✭✭
Looking for idea's

I have about 20-30 sets like the one posted. All are toned but in varying degrees.
The are all in the 1960's. What are they worth? they must have more value since they are toned.......provided one like toningimage

Where is the best placed to sell them? bst, Ebay......(I think I will lose my butt) or maybe at the up coming Long Beach show?

Also I have about 20 or so "year sets"......also toned, they vary from 50's and 60's.

Or should I hold and wait?

Any advise will be appreciatedimage

In my experience, many collectors do not want the proof sets in Capital holders - especially when the OGP was flat packs. That being said, that excludes many buyers.

But there are a group of colllectors that enjoy the toned proofs - and will pay a premium for it. The issue is - how big a premium? Personally, I won't pay much of a premium (usually don't have to) unless the coins are monster toned.

I've had several nicely toned sets in my display case for two shows - toned similarly to your 1962 set. Nobody has even asked to see them, much less ask for a price. I tend to price them at somewhere between bid and ask - and negotiate from there.

  • I don't really have any advice as far as selling but I'd recommend checking for varieties if you haven't already done so.

The 1962 Franklin DDO FS-101 and possible misplaced mintmark FS-901 are a couple to look for in 1962. If you have other dates you can click the link in my sigline for other Franklin varieties to look for.

With silver as high as it is ... is there even a numismatic market for these?
    All glory is fleeting.
  • I would put one of each on eBay just to test the water. I have fond that on ther alot of
people are looking for the toned proof sets. The "year sets" I would also try there. It won't
cost thing to see and you might be surprised. Start them at GS Ask plus 10 or 20 % and
3 or 4 bucks postage and combine postage.

Gray sheet bids on common silver proof sets are just about melt. Often less......
I've cut up hundreds of them lately.........

    Stef,

I don't think there is a "best place/time" on these image
It's more of "are the right eyes there at the right time" and "when do you want/need the money" type of thing....

For instance, you know I like toned coins as well, however, while I would love a few, given where things are with silver, etc, I would likely be close to greysheet and maybe just a touch over.
Some folks are going to look at them to see if they could get high grades and in the right plastic.

If you try ebay, I do think you will be a little disenchanted. At LB, would you look to sell to dealers? I don't think many would pay strong for raw proof sets in that era. Now, if you found a friendly dealer who deals with toned coins who would let you consign them through his/her table, that may help. That may be something to think about....and since you are local, you wouldn't be hit with shipping charges/delays.

I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment

late 50' early 60's proof sets have very little demand in capitol holders. I would sell the half's separate. The holders sell separate and the minor coins sell as lots. You may consider already suggested testing the waters with a listing on ebay.

As for pricing dealers usually figure out melt and price them a bit over that.
It is not exactly cheating, I prefer to consider it creative problem solving!!!
