Sharing coins between registry sets

Hi everyone,

I just started two registry sets: A Peace Dollar set and a Complete Type Set. It seems it gives me the option to apply a Peace DOllar in my Peace Dollar set to my type set. Now my first reaction in my mind was that it would not be 'right' to count the same Peace Dollar in more than one set. And it seems getting into that practice would get messy. For instance, if I break my Peace Dollar set up it may break any other registry set that depended on that dollar.

What do you guys normally do? Do you keep them separate and distinct? Or does one coin fill slots in multiple differents sets?

Thanks.

Jacob

  • It does not get messy at all. You can delete the dollar from one set, and it will remain in the others. If you sell the coin and remove it from your PCGS inventory, then the coin will be removed from all your sets.

I use a lot of the same coins in different sets.

There are some "purists" out there that frown on it, but there are no rules against it, and most people do it.

    Cheers !

edited for spelling...some day I will learn to type.
  • Thanks for sharing your perspectives on it. I appreciate it.

Do you really want to buy 2 highly graded Peace dollars just to have each in one set?

For example, you stretch your budget to get an MS67 Peace dollar.
All your others are MS65 or under.
Do you NOT use it in both registries?

You actually buy 2 coins of the same date/mm because 1 is in your type set?
Maybe some do, but they probably have more money than they know what to do with.
    I couldn't, and didn't.

Not to mention the storage capacity issues you could run into.

LOL. Maybe someone will give me a quantity discount.
  • Keeping in mind that the registry sets consists of "virtual" collections and are not bound to physical coins. Any single coin can fill numerous holes in your registry sets and this is not a problem from the registry perspective. The problem becomes, on the collector's end, the single coin can really only fill one physical hole in your collection, so then it becomes a choice as to how you display your collection. As I have multiple coins listed in multiple sets, this issue becomes somewhat problematic for me and I've wrestled with this dilemma a number of times.
