1832 Bust Half Meyer Collection question(*pics posted!)

I have started a type set of bust halves in PCGS slabs. However, the two I've come across both say genuine with the Meyer collection attribute on them. The code 6160.GN isn't a cleaned code, so I was wondering if anyone knows the story behind these particular halves. I have an 1832 SL bust half that is definitely BU to my eye.

Charlton "Swampy" Meyer (now deceased) was one of the great collectors of early coins, before his death, he had complete variety collections of bust quarters and halves.

Others know/knew more about him and I'm sure they'll chime in..

The entire Meyer collection was slabbed by PCGS, I believe with help from top bust half dealer Sheridan Downey; Many of the coins were nice, but also many of the tougher coins were impaired in some way. This was some time before PCGS went "live" with genuine grades for the public, and the Genuine was reserved as a favor for special coins and collections, for coins that wouldn't grade.

There was once a 1943 copper cent in one of these holders, with a deep scratch on the obverse where someone tested to see if it was plated (should have tried a magnet)

Post a picture of the coin, if you can, it sounds like it's nice and has a cool pedigree and historic holder

Don't know these two and don't have that catalog handy...but many early halves are tooled...mostly in the hair. I'll try to find the catalog if no one else chimes in.

  • The particular coin that you have has never been graded by PCGS. Sheridan sent many of the coins to PCGS for grading but wanted all the coins in holders with the Meyer's pedigree. This was before PCGS was doing " Genuine" holders and still doing Body-bags. Sheridan asked PCGS to encapsulate some of the coins that he didnot send in for grading in a Genuine Holder and they did so but when PCGS put them in the slab, the added the .GN designation. Later they went public with the Genuine Holder and added the code for the flaw. So you have a coin that was never graded by PCGS since it contains the .GN designation. The caveat to this is that Sheridan selected coins that he thought were questionable as far as wether they would grade or not but this was strictly his impression and some of the .GN's have been submitted and graded. "Swampy" Meyers had some 600 coins in his collection, so it was somewhat an economic decision as to which coins were submitted at the grading price and which to just pay for a holder.

It's hard to say for sure by the photos, but I think I see a real nice clash on the reverse.
Knowing where this coin came from, it would not surprise me if this is "special" example of
    an otherwise common O-102 (R1) probably a 102a. (R3)
I'd grade it MS net, but it looks like it had a recent dip. Very nice details.

Here is what Overton says about the Reverse:

    Arrowheads malformed and solidly joined.
Die defect at tip of right wing.
    Golf time!!

Thanks for the input guys! I think I'm gonna send it in for a shot at a regrade, but primarily to get the variety attributed.
