Roll searching question and comment:
I've been searching through bank rolls of cents recently and was wondering if any of the more experienced board members might offer some tips on how to obtain
decent rolls. Though I've found about 30% of the coins are pre 82 copper, I have yet to find a wheat cent. Any tips on what I might ask for at the bank to increase my chances of a find? Some have mentioned searching 'boxes of rolls'. What are they referring to?
I've been reading through some old threads relating to "unsearched" rolls being sold on Ebay and thought I'd throw in my two bits..... There's been quite a bit of discussion previous to my post which has pointed out that for the sellers who have decent feedback on the rolls, it's the general opinion of the board that the rolls are "seeded" with the occasional worn semi-key date but otherwise the rolls are indeed searched.
Not to defend what's out there...... But, I know for a fact that some sellers of "unsearched" rolls are indeed accurately representing the rolls as "unsearched". I know this because I did sell a couple of truly unsearched rolls of 1964 and pre silver dimes. I posted the photo I've attached here and sold a couple. Sadly though, I got barely over melt price and decided it would be better for me to keep and eventually search them myself as it wasn't worth it if people didn't believe me and pay a dash more to make it worthwhile. For the ones I sold, I got excellent feedback as there were some mercury dimes and BU's mixed in. These rolls were part of an inheritance and were hoarded and hidden since the owner had gathered them from the bank in '64 when they had decided to discontinue silver. Smart dude!
I'm certain that he didn't search them so the only way they could be considered searched would be from their circulation and bank rolling experience. Consider this "searched"?
I love the thrill of the search! Any tips on future decent rolls? I still have some of these but I'm saving them for a special occasion.

i'm not certain exactly what you are after but a lot of people enjoy looking through the 5,000 count bags of wheat cents
prices vary from say $150-225
just another option for searching if you haven't already done that

Yes..... That's exactly the type of answer I'm looking for here. Thank you indeed.
When I asked at my local bank I was told that customer rolled coin was all they had.
Some previous threads had mentioned the possibility of getting old estate rolls from big purchases that my local B&M's might have made. I'm going to look into this as well.

These guys take roll searching to a new level.
Edit to add: I normally average $5 in cents a month, but sometimes I go months without doing any, and then do $5 a week for a few weeks in a row.
When do you suppose the next special occasion will come around
Make sure you post when it does
For me, personally, I want my circulation collections to be strictly pulled from circulation- no purchases whatsoever. It's pretty neat and a real challenge to see what can be found out there.

It's not going to be very long if I don't at least find a wheat cent along the way here....
Good idea to share the cracking of one of these old rolls! It's more fun to share...
I'll take and post photos of the whole process. Ahhhh
something fun to look forward to.

That makes the two of us!
I still need to fill two holes in my roosie circ collection from 46-58. I'm only missing P's and D's since I'm on the west coast.
and four rolls had old wrappers. when I opened them they were all pre 1982 cents with about 30% being wheats...
I have much better luck buying rolls turned in by customers than by the box..
BTW I also found a 1983 DDR with beautiful doubling in AU last Friday...

Hey OP, what's the story behind those rolls? I'd love to buy a few. >>
I don't want to be buying my bags and rolls from YOUR bank!!!!
I've already sold too many and sorry but i love the hunt too much to part with any more at this point... Sorry. I will post a picture series next time I crack one though. Promise....
