There is also the annual CAND show in Hamilton this Sat & Sunday .. it is always a very good show with topnotch dealers (to be in CAND, you have to be). I'm undecided about Torex next month. BiB

Bill, how would you compare the Hamilton show to Niagara or Torex? Worth a drive from Toronto?

Not much in world coins here. Mainly US. Sunday is usually really dead. On the plus side, the show is about 5 minutes from the casino, and their buffet (the last part is for Roman image)

I haven't been to TOREX or CAND shows in a while, but from what I remember the CAND show had more variety in coins. IS it that way still?

TwoKopeiki ... I think that the CAND show is much better than the Niagara show, but there are many of the same dealers you will see. The CAND show has only dealers who are members of the organization, an organization that is very tough to get into because of the voting to allow in and the integrity/guarantees of the membership. For my collecting niches, the CAND show is better than what Torex has evolved into .. I'm a raw coin person and Torex any more is almost all bright, shiny and holstered/encased coins. I'm also not fond of the Airport Hilton where beers are nearly $10 in the pub. I liked it much better downtown. I've been to many Torex's and most of the CAND's for the last 10-11 years, but only to Niagara twice, plus when the CNA convention was there. I'll still go to Torex if some of my close collecting friends from the US and here in Canada are going to attend, but I'm not sure yet about Feb .. many have refused to go there anymore for a number of reasons. BTW, I'll see you there, Don.... whoops, I see that you were talking about Niagara, not Hamilton, Don.

The Niagara show is on the US side. This show is in its last legs. Not advertised at all and no CAND dealers. In fact, I can only think of a few dealers there who are full time coin dealers. Most are part timers. Like I said before, very little in World Coins, especially now since Dick passed away.

Went to the Hamilton show today. Only a handful of dealers and pretty much the same folks I see @ Canadian Niagara show and Torex. Very little world stuff, but did manage to pick up an unattributed 1821/22 Guadalajara 8 Reales in AU condition. There are a few pvc spots that I will have to try and get rid of with some good ol' acetone before sending it in.

I'll post pre and post pics in the next few days.

On the topic of this overdate: Every time I see an example of it, I try to think of a scenario as to why this overdate even occurred. I'm guessing it was close to the end of the year when they prepared 1822 dies, hoping that the existing 1821 would last until the new year. If the last 1821 die broke earlier than expected, they would probably be forced to recut one of the 1822 dies back to 1821. It's a neat anomaly.

I like the Hamilton CAND because of the dealer association (I think that there are only 30-35 CAND approved members) and the venue .. the Sheraton on King is easy to get to, close parking and wide aisles. They also tend to have more raw or uncert stuff, especially when you know most of the dealers and they let you look through the "I just picked this up and haven't had time to look through it" stuff. Other CAND dealers are there because they are mostly "special order" folks ... who carry very little inventory to the show, but can get their hands on what you need in a matter of weeks .. Sandy Campbell and Dale Shaffer are two that fall into that category. I found a few neat Vicky large cent varieties that we had put in Charlton and helped a few dealers out by telling them what they had, rather than what was marked ... a few thousand worth of upgrades for them.

TOREX was a bust, as always. I was in and out in under 30 minutes. There were only a few pre-1822 Mexico and those were overpriced for the condition they were in. Two 1821 Zacatecas in high XF and low AU with hairlines for $200, 1821 Mexico City weakly struck (not unusual) cleaned AU for $150 and a 1772 Mexico City Carlos III (inverted assayer initials) in XF40 for $950.

Oh, well - more money saved for CICF image
