One for your BBL--Update: Good news for scammers!

bums1953

Within about an hour of this ending, I had 2 eBay messages and an email(he had already requested my contact info from eBay) as follows:

1st message:
i am now contacting ebay for the shill bidder u used. the original bidder removed buy it now and then bid 1 cent less than buy price-i wasnt born yesterday. u will refund money of over 40.

2nd message:
this card was one by me for 31.87 - you will refund difference

email:
patrick - i won the s.o. leaders koufax card for 31.87 and will not be robbed of the extra 40. your shill bid. ebay agrees and will be taking action. so will paypal. i wasn't born yesterday. that is the most obvious shill bid ever. either send card and refund me 40. right now or refund the money in full - your choice. if you wanna keep your top seller rating clean i recommend you refund me the 40. and send the card and cut the bs. u also have a bad contact phone number. u will hear from ebay on that too. we can either settle this simply or we can take the hard route?

Thank God he didn't get my phone number.

But still going to be my first neg in over 12 years on eBay.

His messages probably qualify for extortion, which violates eBay policy. Therefore you should probably be able to get eBay to remove a negative if you end up getting one.

Thanks for the BBL addition. Sorry you got stuck with that guy.

Nice, what a nut. The guy places 3 bids over the amount he ends up winning it for and says you are ripping him off? I would contact Ebay right away even if its just to put a note on your file, forward them the email if it wasn't through the messenger system. They won't do much for you and you'll probably get a negative but if you file a NPB and he pays when you ship the card (with tracking, insurance and maybe signature?) and he claims you sent an empty package they will side with you.

If you think you are getting a neg sell to the under bidder, for a guy who is also a seller this is pretty bizarre.

I reported him for feedback extortion as soon as I got the email, but I'm not sure if it's clear cut enough for them to remove a neg. (e.g. he doesn't explicitly mention feedback)

That's what I ended up doing. With this guy I'm likely to get a neg anyway. I'd rather not risk $70 while doing so.

Yes, his emails certainly qualify for extortion. He is alluding to the fact that you better give him a refund or else he will ding you. He cannot do that. Ebay will side in your favor. I, too, would contact ebay and give your side of the story. They will be able to see where the other bidders are from and that they are unrelated to you or your other auctions.

How much was the BIN? Did someone really bid a penny less than the BIN?

EDIT: Oh, I guess it was $69.99. Why would someone bid $69.98?
  • Ughh That stinks.

Sorry you have to go through that.

I recently made a purchase. It was a lot of cards by one particular player and his first auction - hi listed as a buy it now for like $69 and about $12 shipping. No one bid on it and so it closed and he relisted.

Then I saw it was soon relisted now at $50 with free shipping or make offer - so I made an offer of $35.

About less than 2 hours later I got an email saying it was accepted.

Then a couple of hours later, the seller writes to me asking how i got it for the price of $35 when it was listed at $50. I advised that there was a "make offer" option on it and it was accepted. He writes back again saying that he lowered it to $50 for someone because they made a deal where that person was going to buy it for that amount. He also asked me to list the time that it was accepted.

I gave him the time I got the "best offer accepted" email and I politely told him that I hope this transaction will go smoothly. He did reply saying that he was just somdering how he lost $15 dollars on this but for me not to worry and theat he was going to send it out. I did get it in a nice timley manner this past Friday and I left him positive feedback - such as he had left me BEFORE I even received the cards which I thought was nice.

See if he will agree to cancel, because no way does this end up well for you.

  • Sounds like a new scam to me.

Step 1, get two accounts that are unconnected

    Step 2, bid

Step 3, Shill yourself, but make it look good

Step 4 , harass poor top seller with extortion, in hopes you get a card for half price!

The .01 cent bid below the BIN price strikes me as odd

It's not that odd. The person placing the bid didn't know how to value the card and assumed an auction bid wouldn't exceed a seller's BIN. So rather than hit the BIN he tried getting it cheaper by bidding just below the BIN and thought he'd be the automatic winner at something under that. The BIN price however was very fair and I'm surprised than even in the Beckett holder it sold as cheap as it did. In a PSA holder it could have gone for 2x-3x the price it did so the winner should be pretty thrilled. In this case I think the BIN influenced and limited what the bidders thought the card might be worth. If it never had a BIN on it then it probably would have gone higher.

Like he actually thinks that there are lost of 3k FB shill accounts out there...well except for the one discussed on this board several times before it got poofed
IT IS ALWAYS CHEAPER TO NOT SELL ON EBAY

At first, I also thought something was odd about a guy bidding. 01 below the BIN price, but after looking at the bid history, it completely makes sense as that same bidder put the initial bid in on 1/20 to take off the BIN price taking the chance that bidding would be less than the BIN price before bidding at price of one cent less than BIN price on 1/22. And if it weren't for the winning tool, er bidder, the strategy would have quirked nicely and the underbidder would have won the auction for 32.87.

I actually like that idea.. interesting.. makes all kinds of sense..

(the bidding .01 cent under the bin)

He harassed other bidders back when you could email other bidders. Now that you can't, he moved on to sellers.

I've circumvented ebays warning telling me I exceded the sellers BIN price.

And I've also bid a penny less than the BIN.

You know dam well it's odd.

  • Update: Well, eBay refused to remove the neg because his feedback extortion was in an email instead of eBay messages. So scammers, if you want to extort partial refunds, just make sure to do it through email! I'm sure they already know that, which pretty much makes eBay's feedback extortion policy purely decorative.
  • WinPitcherWinPitcher Posts: 27,726 ✭✭✭
The reason could be email can be manipulated, ebay message system can't.

    Just a thought.

    Good for you.

This is true, but it looks like the buyer went out of his way to extort via email rather than eBay, which makes it obvious he knows what he is doing and is just trying to game the system.

Personally, I wouldn't be too upset over this whole debacle. You replied to his feedback appropriately and professionally. I don't think the negative will hurt you. Plus you alerted others to his behavior and in doing so prevented this ebayer from causing more damage to other sellers feedback.
Next MONTH? So he's saying that if he wins, the best-case scenario is that he'll be paying for it two weeks after the auction ends?

Forget blocking him; find out where he lives and go punch him in the nuts. --WalterSobchak 9/12/12
