NEW PCGS PRONG HOLDERS

SteveSteve Posts: 3,312 ✭✭✭
Maybe I'm just not looking in the right place on the CU web site but as far as I can tell, there is no OFFICIAL mention of the roll-out of the new prong holders. WHY? I know this message board alerted us to it a few weeks ago, but what's the secret? If the intent of PCGS is to roll-out the new holders for all their coins. isn't that NEWS that should be communicated now? Or maybe a couple of months ago. One of the few things that bother me about our hosts is the lack of communication in many important areas. I write this thread now because I just made my weekly pass through on ebay looking at slabbed Lincoln cents. Most of the newly slabbed high grade proofs are now showing up in the prong holders. Of course, NGC versions are now mostly in their new holders. So what is the secret? Can I guess that the dealers want to dispose of as many of the old holders as possible before PCGS will officially and publically announce that this is the holder for all our newly graded coins in 2012 and beyond? Is my perception of this WRONG? I'd appreciate your comments. Thanks. Steveimage

Relax! Prongs only going forward. Big DH told me to tell you. image
  • I got my submission back this week. All prongs. They didn't look as bad as I thought they would.
  • With all of the talk about "look at the coin, not the slab (or what's written on it)" in these forums, I'm surprised people are so passionate about what the slab looks like or what year it was rolled out.

EDIT: After reading my post above, it seems snide and rude and doesn't help the OP's question. Not my intent. I don't know the answer about the pronged holder, but rather am expressing my confusion as to why it is significant.

I have to say I'm not a fan of the new pronged holders for reeded edge coins (i.e., the vast majority
of what I own and submit). There is nothing intrinsically interesting about a reeded edge, but there
is value in seeing the entire rim, which the prongs partially obscure, both for grading and photography
purposes. Furthermore, I find the holes in the gasket distracting.

I hope PCGS rethinks the prong holders, or at least makes them optional.

My intent in the OP was not to criticize the new holder, but to express my concern as to why PCGS feels they can't officially announce it yet. Steveimage

How long 'till current holders are considered "coffins" ,
or will they someday sell for a mark-up like OGHs ? image

That's a good point about the photography. One of the really nice things about the current holders is that they can be photographed and the coin can be cropped in its totality- and that makes for some awesome photos.

Better get them now, everyone will complain, then they'll change them after a few short months and they'll be rare like the black slabs. image

I agree. I don't like the prongs at all in a photograph. To the uninitiated, they look like something is wrong with the rim and it's a bit distracting. The current slabs are very photogenic. Just my opinion.

I collect Bust Series coins, those with the wording on the edge. The coins often have errors in what letters can be seen, so the prong holders are good for that. However, I would like the prongs to be much smaller, like the NGC prongs, because the star to dentil positions are used for attribution. Sure, one can see thru the plastic prong, but it is not always so easy, with worn dentil, or poorly made dentils.

PCGS should include a check box on the submission forms, so the submitter can choose between the holder designs.
I collect Capped Bust series by variety in PCGS AU/MS grades.

I've received several recent submissions all with the Prong Holders. I don't have an issue with the Prongs. I do have an issue with the majority of the coins placed in the holder on an angle. Is it really that difficult to get the coin in the holder correctly? Applies to the folks ATS too. Try tapping the holder on the side to turn the coin and you'll end up cracking the plastic...yep, it just happened.
