Card shop robbed in Seattle

I live about 2 miles from this shop and have bought a few cards there. Ryter the owner says he suspects someone from Michigan sold a large amount of vintage cards on ebay that described his stolen merchandise. They got a great surveillance shot of the guy but the cops haven't done anything yet. One of the cards was a '52 Campy in that would probably grade a 3 or 4. Doug

Anyone find this to be odd?

The video is of decent quality and still no suspect. Wow, that is odd !

Did the shop not have an alarm? If this is the case, that was a mistake. Yes, he had surveillance video, but you NEED to have an alarm.

Yes Mike, a motion alarm is a must. You can't replace your childhood. I guess that was an expensive lesson to learn.

I hope they catch that guy. Doug, thanks for finding out if there are any additional updates.

I was curious if anyone on the boards would recognize the guy on the video.

    Man that sucks!

I am suprised there are no leads. That guy was on camera for 20 minutes, unless he was just a drifter passing through town I would think someone would of recognized him.

Does anyone know if any of the cards were graded?

We were stunned that another child of ours had been diagnosed. Please, if you don't have a favorite charity, consider giving to the JDRF (Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation)

  • If I were the owner, I would post the video on Youtube with a nice reward. Someone knows who this piece of %$@# is. He obviously knew what he was going after, and not a stranger to the store. That video looks pretty damn good, not to be able to get some clear still photos off of it.

So here's what I remember of the details of the break in. The shop is connected to two other businesses in the building and the guy broke into the business next door and through the dry wall into the shop. If I remember right the owner told me the alarm system ADT(?) I think, did not get activated because he didn't come through the front door. The video of the guy is really good for survielance video. I guess he grabbed a large garbage can and scooped cards into it, mostly vintage. The owner is in a fight with the alarm company, insurance company and I think the cops have not contacted him in awhile. I'll update you all when I go there this afternoon. Doug

Well I visited the owner tonight and this was the only thing he showed me that may lead to something. I am in no position to accuse anyone here but I'll just say the owner says many of the prices written on some of the cards listed are in his handwriting. Probably a weak probable cause but it's strange that those are the only cards this person has ever sold. The auction is long over so who knows how this will end up. Doug

There were at least a few different pricing methods (i.e. type of sticker, handwriting) in there, so if this lot included his cards, the seller must have either A) robbed another store and combined the two or B) thrown in all that other junk to make the lot look different from what was stolen.

I feel for the shop owner. Especially if the lot from the link were his cards. Lots of nice cards in there. According to that ebay user's feedback he has sold a handful of other collections. Not to say that couldn't be done without stealing, but, it's a bit fishy to sell a collection like that all in one lot.

I'm not normally a suspicious person, but check out how many times he uses the word 'collection' in the description. The dude really wants us to know these cards are from his personal collection!
Don't know about the rest of you, but if I amassed these cards over a 25 year period, I'm not selling them in one huge lot on ebay.

hmmm, ebay seller, could you just answer me one question? Whose collection is this anyway?

HUGE MASSIVE SPORTS CARD COLLECTION Huge Value up for auction all from my own Personal Collection that I amassed over the last 25 Years!!! These Cards Are Some of The Toughest and Most Desirable Cards Ever Produced!!!! No Collection can even compare to this mass of Sports Cards that I have collected, I HAVE NOT SEEN ANYTHING LIKE THIS ON EBAY IN MANY YEARS!!! When you do see these collections like this from collector's personal collections they regularly sell for $15,000 to $20,000 easily because they have all the Big NAMES and RARE Cards just like in this collection and this COLLECTION is well worth every Penny that this collection sells for.
  • perhaps start circulating his pic at shows, someone must know him if he knew what he was doing...

  • Wow, that really sucks, hope he had good insurance as $30K is quite a hit. I would also advise anyone with a decent collection to get insurance on it as this could happen to anyone. I personally use Collectibles Insurance and the policy costs are very reasonable (they depend on the value of your collection). It's always better to have insurance and not need it than to need insurance and not have it.
  • Anybody contacted the seller in question, or the buyer? IS this collection THE one that was stolen?

  • << <i>Anybody contacted the seller in question, or the buyer? IS this collection THE one that was stolen? >>

I can't imagine it being the collection. Less then 3% of the cards shown are worth putting in a display case.

Anyone else find the store owner's comments about owning the cards since childhood funny? I guess he never actually sold anything.
