Rethinking my collection stratagies 2012 and beyond

After about 3 years I finally figured out where I want to go in collecting. I started buying proof eaglesmorganspeace and variety of coins here and there, just kind of collecting to collect, and collecting what I liked. Some good buys and some why did I buy those ? with no real goal in mind.

Here i my new plan over the next 30 years with hopefully with a yearly budget of $3000 to $4000 per year for the next 10 years and increase the budget by a $1000 or so or more after that.

My new core collection

4 Boxes of 20 will be my collection of keepers along with some silver/gold stacking if possible.( I have 3 children and me, so 4 kids then)

Box 1 will consist of all Pre 1933 gold coins,
Box 2 will be Morgans and or Peace Dollars
Box 3 will be based on Moderns (20th/25th eagles An and such)
Box 4 will be any other coins/overages that I find interesting, my fun box

I think this will give me the freedom/flexibility I want and keep the size manageable and set the buying requirement that I need. I Tend to buy what I like and not stick to a series anyways. So every year I can create a list and find the best that I like. My goal for each year will be one gold coin and one to three coins for the other boxes.

It will definitely give you both flexibility and a stated goal. However, I predict your strategy will change many times in the coming decades. This is only natural and I sell little wrong with a constant evaluation of a collection.

Actually, I like the approach and have done a similar realignment, and I am very happy with it, so far.
  • You need a 5th box, 100 coins even. Maybe a box of nice world crowns or world gold.

You can do a classic 20 pc gold type set for the first box. That would be a neat project.

Or have a box of 20 commems

i recently reduced 200 or so raw and slabbed coins, down
to a target of 3 boxs of 20........PCGS/NGC only....no prong
holders.......I currently have about 45 slots filled........
the goal was to make it neat and tidy, easily cataloged.
And just yesterday i just felt like looking at em, and it is
so easy to get a quick look at all the stuff, without it
being a major production...........the before and after
value of the coins remained the same.....

I think it's a good strategy. However, down the road
your taste and interest may change. Good luck !!!

I like it that you have a strategy but it's hard to stay on target. It's going to take discipline.
