Highlights from my last two subs and a question for scanner experts

Hi guys,

Just wanted to post a few highlights from my last couple subs. All stuff is from my personal collection with nothing for sale or trade.

All four '50's cards are from my dad's childhood collection.

I remember taking this one (unprotected) to school back in the 70's to show my friends. I'm amazed that it's survived to be 5-worthy.

Pretty darn nice for a 5.

Very happy with this Mathews!

This Munson has some kind of imperfection built into the case at top right...dang it! I know I can submit it as a mechanical error. Just so much trouble for one card.

Last summer, I bought an Epson Perfection V330 Photo Scanner. This scanner does an amazing job scanning raw cards. I'm really happy with it in that way. What I'm not liking about it is how it has a tendency to scan graded cards. The 1980 Yount is the perfect example of what I'm talking about. At the top, you will notice that it scans a shadow from the top interior line of plastic inside the holder, as well as kind of a translucent dotted line on the bottom plastic line. Does anyone know if there is any kind of remedy for either of these issues? Perhaps there are some settings I can tweak. I'm a pretty tech-savvy guy, but I must admit that I haven't buried myself into the guide for this scanner.

I hope one of these days when PSA finally gets around to redesigning their holders, they'll make it so that you can see the entire card inside the holder. I hate it when the PSA logo in the bottom right of the holder obscures the bottom right corner on 50's cards.

Thanks in advance for any advice anyone can provide on the scanning issues.

Todd

I emailed Joe about that years ago. No response.

Notice that the back of the slabs don't have this problem. It's due to the "slots" being on the front half of the slab and the "tabs" being on the back half. What you're seeing is the slightly wider "slots" encroaching into the viewing window of the slab. They can (and are) used to conceal edge damage when scanning slabbed cards for auction.

Nice cards...try scanning with the lights off in the room and the top up.
  • It looks like the '78 Schmidt and Yount have a black background and do not suffer from that issue. I always scan with the lid up. See if that helps. All the other ones have it but have a lighter background as well.

The shadow is caused by the fact that sensor and light source can't both be completely perpendicular to the surface of the item being scanned, the light has to be offset slightly from the sensor. So, in your situation, the scanner is shooting light from the top of the slab downward, hence the shadow.

  • Thanks all. Must have scanned the '78 Yount and Schmidt lid up and forgot that I had. Will try that on some cards I've already scanned and compare when I have time.
