Will PSA regrade OC?

I have a few PSA 8 OC cards that to me look like they would get straight 7's.
Will PSA regrade these cards if I do not take them out of the holder or do I have to crack them open and re-submit them asking for no qualifiers.
Thanks

I've always gone the "cracking" route and its worked fine. Never tried sending them in still holdered.

  • This is probably a stupid question but since I rarely have an intelligent one I'll go ahead. How do you crack cards out of holders without damaging them. I've got a couple I would like to resubmit but I'm afraid of ruining the card. Another question would be, if I have a SGC 92 would I be better off sending it to Psa and ask them to crack it out and regrade or break it out myself and then send it in?

    Thanks,

Wayne, I know PSA will not crack a holder from another company.

First thing that comes to mind is, "Be very, very, careful".............I hold the card on its side and take a jewelers flat head screw driver and insert in seem at the end of the slab where the label is. Tap back of the screw driver with hammer and when the seem loosens, I twist the screw driver until the slab separates. I have done this 6-7 times and have had no problems

And the upside of cracking an SGC 92 is that I seem to get 9's from PSA about 30% of the time. If they knew that it was from a 92 holder, I guarantee it would get an 8 every time!!

  • Is SGC more liberal in grading some years rather than others? I had some nice nm/mt 68 topps semi stars that I recently had graded by SGC. One came back a '96. On the front of course it looked mint, yet on the back, on one of those gold corners there was clearly some wear visible to the naked eye. I thought "ahhh, this would get a PSA 8 for sure". Low and behold I tripled the value with a '96. A similar thing with the Yaz all star card. Some very minor corner wear on the back, yet it got a '92.

    CardKid-

I think if there is any one aspect of a card that is routinely missed in grading, it is the back of the card. I have seen SGC and PSA miss back corner wear on multiple occassions (I have a 1982 Fleer Mike Schmidt PSA 10 with back wear). Even moreso, I have seen horrible inconsistency with regards to back centering on 1955 Bowman baseball.

Of course -- with 1955 Bowman baseball, if the front is nearly 50/50 both ways, and the card back is 90/10 and gets the O/C qualifier -- I just about go psycho.
I am actively buying MIKE SCHMIDT gem mint baseball cards. Also looking for any 19th century cabinets of Philadephia Nationals. Please PM with additional details.
  • I agree with MikeSchmidt. I have seen card backs with corner wear get high grades also. Another interesting feature that often goes ignore is back centering. I have a straight 8 Tony Perez card that is centered like 95/5 maybe worse on the back. No OC qualifier on a regular submission without a stipulation for NQ. Slack being cut; I guess.

Wayne, here is what Bruce Moreland has to say about "cracking"....

  • I always get nervous sending in cards with 95-5 centering on the back. Especially if it is really obvious, like the pink backs of '69 Topps. You just can't hide it. I've seen some 9's with perfect mint backs, yet other years are very tough to gets 9's (74/75 Topps basketball for example). The blue backs on those make them a killer. Even a little wear knocks them down to an 8. With the 68's, corner wear can be hidden on the front, that's why I'd think they'd look at the back to get a better determination.
  • I appreciate all of the help. I feel somewhat more comfortable in giving it a try and cracking open some holders.

rw2win - psa will crack open other companies holders. I just sent in 4 sgc cards and called them first. They said to write on the form that I release them from any liability for damage caused by cracking open the sgc holder.

One of the sgc 92's looked absolutely mint and I thought I might have a better chance at a 8 than a 9 if I sent it in the sgc holder. I am not normal since I am looking to complete a straight 8 set and this is a pop 1 card from the 1965 psa 8's. (Please don't be a 9, please don't be a 9, Please don't be a 9) I've got major problems.

  • PSA has ALWAYS cracked open the SGC cards that I send in for cross-over grading.

They have NEVER damaged a card in the process.

Then let me submit it for you, and it's guaranteed not to get a 9. image
