Shipping from Canada to US

I am looking at maybe purchasing an item from a Canadian dealer in the $1000 range. What can I expect as far as customs fees go? I bought a $300 item from the UK about a year ago and there was no fee but I was thinking on a higher dollar item there may be.

Try to avoid international if at all possible.

us customs typically don't charge for incoming, for that amount of $ stay away from ups, fedex, etc... and you should be fine.
